"I'm scared...I'm scared to get to the heart of my own mind." - Satoru Fujiwara
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Story
Satoru Fujiwara is a 29 year old manga artist who also happens to be a pizza delivery guy, living his life to the fullest (lol, i kid). He has the ability to travel through time (thought it was never really explained how he got that power in the first place). One day, he used his ability which he calls "Revival" and stopped an accident from happening. Too bad he got injured instead...Then, his mother stayed at his home for a while until he feels a lot better. The next
...
day, Satoru, after his job, found his mother...dead. A witness saw him with blood in his hands and the police came (seriously?). The guy was wrongfully accused of killing his own mother.
Revival happened, and instead of travelling 2-5 minutes earlier, he was sent way way back to 1988, 18 years in the past. Confused of what's happening and realizing that his mother is gone...It struck him. Maybe the reason why he was sent back in the past, is that his mother's murder is connected to the incident that happened involving his classmate, Kayo Hinazuki.
It was Satoru's chance to solve the puzzle and make things right again, or so he thought...
Art
It wasn't really exceptional and it wasn't that bad either. It was alright, but I kinda think they could've kick it up a notch by making it darker, since it's psychological and mysterious. But as the series progresses, I felt that it kinda grew on me and it was satisfying as well.
Sound
You know what they say, when anime openings are good, you choose not to skip ahead...I kinda got a taste of that.
When I first started watching it, I got really hooked with the opening song and I find myself humming it since I can't really sing Japanese songs. Though, I did try my best but failed miserably.
The ED song (Sayuri - Sore wa Shiisana Hikari no Youna) was okay and the voice actors did a pretty good job too, especially Satoru's - It was nice and pretty neat.
Character
Satoru Fujinuma is far off one of the most boring characters in the story. He is the protagonist, but his character lacks depth. The guy spends his life half-assing everything, but I must admit, he has some good points. I admire that he saves anyone in trouble whenever he uses "Revival", though he sometimes gets hurt in the process. His character is alright but I wish they could've made him stronger-personality wise.
Kayo Hinazuki, an indifferent type of person, whom Satoru intends to save from an unknown serial killer (which is revealed on the later part of the story) is a victim of child abuse, which explains her cold and distant personality.
Airi Katagiri is a high school girl that Satoru trusts the most and whom he can fully depend on. I felt bad of what happened to her father...but despite everything that happened, she chose to live life head on.
Sachiko Fujinuma - BEST MOM EVER. "Yokai" as Satoru always say, has a sharp eye and always know what's wrong, unlike some other parents in the story (-_-)
I read her history on wikia, and found out she lived a harsh life (when she quit her work). Seriously, being a single mother and raising a kid is no joke.
The characters were very real, IMO. What they're going through, how they live their lives, and how they grow in the story felt real.
Watched it for 4 hours straight just bc...
Enjoyment
It was a roller coaster kind of ride. For only 12 episodes, it never failed to deliver. The thrill is amazingly good and leaves you wanting more after every episode. The mystery makes you think. The story makes you feel. And the ending...
The ending made it complete. It ended the way it should be.
Sure it had some plot holes and kinda predictable at some points, but as the series goes on, those things will not matter at all.
Highly recommended to everyone. Overall, one of the most memorable. Definitely, the best anime of the season.
