Although Monster's narrative is arguably more polished overall, FMA has a similar approach to its story (despite belonging in a different genre). Both shows rely on an element of mystery and refrain from rushing their respective plots, and sometimes seemingly stop dead in their tracks to focus on humanizing their character casts. Both shows are also very human stories at their core, focusing on relatable subjects (Monster being about morality and FMA being more about human obsession). Much like Dr. Tenma, FMA's Edward Elric is a person whose beliefs are being constantly challenged by the events of the story, making for some very thought-provoking character development. Also, both shows present a rich balance of light-hearted and darker elements while being very down-to-earth (though it should be noted that comedy is much more prevalent in FMA). In short: anyone who enjoyed Monster's style of storytelling is likely to appreciate FMA's approach to the action shounen genre, even if one doesn't like said genre at all.
