When I found out that Another was a mystery horror show, I was pretty excited since there are not a lot of animes of that specific genre, and the ones that are, most of the time, ain't even as scary as they intend to be. After giving it a try and watching it entirely, all I can say it's that it was kind of a mixed bag.
STORY (5/10): There are some cool elements here and there. The first episodes are really good, full of mystery, and really interesting, however, it ends up showing its flaws once it reaches its middle point. First off, the
...
curse or whatever you want to call it doesn't make enough sense at all and the explanation we get is half-assed. Second, the pacing; as I said previously, the beginning is really slow, which is not a problem per se, in fact, I really liked it until the latter half, where it seems that the show ends abruptly in order not to surpass the intended episode count. In addition to that, the deaths are so ridiculous and too CAMPY that instead of making you feel scared, shocked or even thrilled about what you're watching, you can sometimes end up laughing. Also, in my opinion, a good mistery series is one that makes senses once you put out all the clues. Here, there is almost nothing that could indicate who the extra person is. It seems that the chosen one was completely arbitrary. What's worse is that the show could have ended way back if Misaki actually did something about it but I guess, that wasn't convenient, which I get. CAN WE ALSO TALK ABOUT THAT WEIRD DANCE MOMENT OUT OF NOWHERE?! What's up with that?!
ART (7/10): There's nothing extremely negative I could say about the art. The characters seem generic but they are well designed. The background has that kind of a dark filter, which certainly works and is appropiate to what the show wants to portray.
SOUND (8/10): The opening is nothing that impressive, though I liked it after a few listens. The ending was a very calm and a decent addition to the show, however, just as the opening, it is nothing remarkable. A lot of the shows have a much better soundtrack. The background music is perfect and fitting in making you feel in suspense.
CHARACTERS (2/10): The characters are really bland and most of them do not develop at all. In fact, a lot of them follow archetypes we've seen done better before, like Mei, who is an evident Rei Ayanami clone, and Izumi, who is pretty much like every tsundere character. The worst out of all the cast is definitely the PROTAGONIST, due to the fact that there is nothing interesting about his personality and point of view. Apart from what I've said before, they are not even relatable, which makes it difficult to care about whether they are going to survive or not.
ENJOYMENT (5/10): I liked it. I actually find it quite fun. I think it could have been way better, but still, a decent watch.
OVERALL (5/10): I wouldn't say this is one of those must watch shows, but, while flawed, it has some aspects that are definitely spot on, so I suggest you all to give it a try, especially if you are a Final Destination fan. I would say this is its anime counterpart.
