Let me start by saying this: Neon Genesis Evangelion is a flawed masterpiece. As in, its flaws are part of what makes it so great.
I will start with NGE's strongest point, its characters and the character development. I believe NGE pioneered AND perfected the character development we see in many of today's anime. It is amazing to see how these teenagers change and essentially dissolve (hah, tang pun) through their interactions with their Evas and, more significantly, through their interactions with one another, which slides me nicely into the story. The story is just like one of the characters in that it starts with a somewhat normal, orderly shell (in this case a cliche mecha/harem anime) which starts cracking as the show gets more and more darker. In the end it shatters completely, revealing a chaotic, philosophical, and self-destructive mess. (And the movie is just chaos defined.) I thought that the ending fit really well, because it parallels the characters and makes the show much more memorable. NGE doesn't just hand you the story on a silver platter. It's subtle, and only really careful viewers would understand what the plot is about. This could be considered a flaw, but I believe this was to focus more on the amazing character development than the story development, not to mention it adds a sense of mystery throughout the show.
The music is great, the orchestra battle themes really set the mood, and the hauntingly beautiful opening theme song still echos in my head to this day. Also, I really love the art style, it looks great, especially for a 90s anime.
The reason why this is considered a classic by so many is that it deconstructs the mecha genre so well. The character, instead of being a hot-blooded badass, is a insecure character who strives for his father's praise. That's all he fights for, not to save the world, but to be accepted by others, and to have a purpose in life. In the end he realizes that relying solely on the Eva for purpose results in losing himself, since others would only recognize him for his Eva. If that's not the biggest blow to the mecha genre, I don't know what is. (Sorry if that was a spoiler, I really wanted to put that in there.)
I think anyone who likes anime should watch this show. It just might change your life. Also, you will like the Rebuild movies much more if you watch the show and the first movie first. Just remember that it was made almost two decades ago.

Please save yourself the trauma and stay the hell away from this demented piece of sheer agony. If I could take back reading this, I would, x1000. I had trouble sleeping for a little bit. I read this when I was younger, about 14, because my friend decided it would be funny to troll me by saying this manga was "a masterpiece of literature and art. Wow, Hinako sure has a lot of problems. In this episode, where we yet again get a slice of her life, Hinako isn't suffering from being a couch potato, she's suffering from FREAKING SCHIZOPHRENIA. Don't believe me? Look at the times after she talks to the camera, where the camera angle switches to a bird's-eye view. She's not holding anyone's hand, nor is there anyone for her to talk to. She just stares at freaking empty space, holding her hand out awkwardly, as the camera resumes its eye-rape.

Toaru Majutsu no Index is an action anime blending together the worlds of fantasy and science fiction, and is set in Academy City, a city full of espers.
The story revolves around Kamijyo Touma, a high schooler who suffers from misfortune due to his right arm, which can dispel any kind of magic or supernatural anomaly. The story is split into different chapters, each of which involve Touma beating the crap out of someone with his Imagine Breaker. Don't let Index's name in the title fool you, the story only revolves around her in the first chapter, while she becomes somewhat of a background character

in the other ones. The stories by themselves are exceptionally well-done and enjoyable, but when they're tied together, the overall story is somewhat lacking. It appeared that a certain person in a certain tube was behind everything and had a big evil plan, but it felt like the anime got cut off before it went into specifics.
The artwork is decent, but nothing special. It is exactly what you would expect from J.C. Staff. There are times when the animation exceeds expectations, like in the Innocentius fight, but there are also times when the quality drops, like Kuroko in the 2nd opening.
The openings are very fresh since they break away from the anime pop norms by using edgy techno with distorted animation. They are very fast-paced and get you excited for the episode, and fit very well with the theme of the anime. If nothing else, the openings just scream "This anime is going to be badass."
Characters have little time to develop, since it seems that each character shows up as a main character/villain for one chapter, then make minor character appearances in the other chapters. Also, Touma preaches a lot to pretty much every bad guy he meets, but it didn't bother me much since those types of main characters are extremely common.
The anime is enjoyable at times, but there are certain moments where it will get a little boring. The ending is by far the least enjoyable, due to things being left unexplained and a rushed attempt at a wrap up.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of those anime that you can't stop hearing about or seeing. Everywhere you turn, you see a Haruhi avatar, or stumble upon a raging KyoAni fanboy's blog post about how stupid Endless Eight is. And you're probably thinking, "What the hell is a Kyon-kun denwa?" Seitokai no Ichizon also made a parody reference to it. With all this publicity, you can't help but think, "I should really watch this anime, just to see what it's about. It's probably going to be awesome!", right? Well...it actually depends on your sense of humor, enjoyment, and...well everything really. About 60% of

anime watchers like/love it, 25% hate it and consider it overrated, and 15% don't actually like it, but give in to peer pressure and just say that it's great.
TL;DR? Short version: It might not be your cup of tea.
The story follows a boy named Kyon, who had long since given up on his dream of witnessing paranormal activity. That is, until he meets Haruhi Suzumiya, who forms a club to look for anything supernatural (that's right, Haruhi isn't the main character). The club itself is pretty ironic, since Haruhi is thought of to have powers equal to that of a god, and is made up of a time traveler, an alien, and an esper. The main formula for a generic Haruhi episode is:
1. The first half of an episode disguises itself as a routine slice of life anime
2. There is some talk about some alien/esper/time traveling stuff
3. Cool fantasy/supernatural things happen.
2. and 3. can be interchangeable or combined.
The art is very good, something you'd expect from Kyoto Animation. There are abstract camera angles aplenty, and the lighting is very vivid. The effects are also well done and succeed in giving it a supernatural feel at times. The animation is very much like KyoAni's other project, Clannad, except the lines in TMoHS are sharper and the characters are drawn differently, for a less shojo-ish style and more for a general style.
The characters...meh, what can I say. There is really little to no character development. Kyon is very laidback, witty, and satirical. Haruhi is very hyperactive. Mikuru is your typical moe type that gets raped in almost every episode (it's by Haruhi though, so it's funny), and Yuki is a Ayanami Rei copy - silent, unless she needs to talk.
LIke I said before, the enjoyment of the series depends on what your sense of humor is. The story is told from Kyon's point of view, so if you think that his wittiness and satirical humor is funny, then you'll enjoy this series. If you get annoyed by his "No I don't want to do anything Haruhi tells me to but I'll do it anyways but I'll whine and make witty comebacks to everything she says. And I'll always look pissed when I'm doing anything with Haruhi, which is all the time. But anything Mikuru does is so kawaii that I can't help but smile for 3 seconds before I go back to looking pissed." ...then don't bother with the series.

5 Centimeters per Second is an animated movie by Makoto Shinkai, and is split into 3 parts: Cherry Blossom, Cosmonaut, and 5 Centimeters Per Second.
The story is a pretty generic love story between 2 people, and about the distance in their relationship. The reason why I gave the story a 9 out of 10 is because it's supposed to be a normal, realistic, love story, and it is executed excellently.
Now, the art is where this anime really stands out. It's simply breathtaking. It's realistic, yet artistic, a blend of fantasy and reality. This sort of art was to be expected from Makoto Shinkai's work,

but he really outdid himself on this anime.
The characters in the story are captured perfectly, and each have their distinct yet very realistic characteristics. The way Takaki always checks his phone, and how he waits at the train tracks long after the train has gone perfectly capture the type of person he's supposed to be- someone who can't let anyone go, and would wait for them forever.
Overall, I give this movie series a 10 out of 10 for the great story, art and, and characters.
