I'm going to be that guy--"A Sign of Affection" and "A Silent Voice" only have one thing in common and that is a character who is hard of hearing. Beyond that, these two series are night and day. A Silent Voice explores the redemption of a former bully and how he seeks forgiveness for his past. One of the people he bullied was a young lady who was deaf. A Sign of Affection is a rom-com about a college-aged deaf student who falls in love with a young man who also goes to her university. The two are completely different in every way, yet they always find ways to communicate with each other. A Sign of Affection is not as gut-wrenching or as tonally dark as A Silent Voice but it does explore the merging of two different ways of life and how to coexist with someone completely different from yourself.

While "Spirited Away" will always have this sense of wonder and nostalgia that it brings with every watch, "The Boy and the Beast" looks to invoke similar feelings. I couldn't help but notice some influences from the Ghibli films, and it turns out that Mamoru Hosoda, the director, worked with Ghibli back in the day- specifically "Howl's Moving Castle." This was one of those films that always caught my eye, but I never got around to it until recently (as of the writing of this recommendation). Check out The Boy and the Beast if you're looking for something heartfelt and slightly unpredictable.

Buddy Daddies

On the surface, Buddy Daddies looks like a "Spy x Family rip-off," but it's far from it. The only thing they have in common is an adorable child character and the faux-family trope made up of criminals/special ops/secret agents etc. Right out of the gate, Buddy Daddies sets itself apart by how the family comes together. The rest of the series focuses on the hitmen learning to co-parent their new adopted child. It's a touching story with a satisfying ending.

Did you know that Masashi Kishimoto has a twin brother? His name is Seishi. Since they both grew up together, they often copied each other. Eventually, Masashi took off with Naruto, but once upon a time, Seishi had his manga series. In certain parts of the world, it's called "O-Parts Hunter." O-Parts follows the story of a kid named Jio who wants to rule the world after living a harsh life of loneliness. His reason for being shunned? At birth, he merged with an evil spirit. Sounds familiar? Despite the Naruto comparisons, O-Parts has a solid cast of characters, a cool power system and an endearing story.

Afro Samurai

While a lot shorter than Samurai Champloo, Afro Samurai has many hip-hop influences in more ways than one--I mean, the music is made by RZA, of all people. Afro Samurai also has that traditional samurai feel and tells an incredible story in a short period.
