As of episode 7, 18if is really amazing to put it short. It is really unique...but that alone does not make it a masterpiece. However before skimming past this review just take note that you should watch past the first episode to decide how it is.

SHORT REVIEW

18if is about a teenage guy who enters witches' dreams. These so called witches have fallen asleep in real life with what's called "Snow White Syndrome", sort of like a coma. The guy enters their dreams and helps them wake back up, in the process helping them solve regrets or revenge they had while previously awake. Each episode has ... a different story with a different witch. Some episodes are cutesy and others are pretty gory. Overall they are each enjoyable on their own.

IN DEPTH REVIEW

18if is about a guy who appears to be in his mid to late teens. He appears to be stuck in some sort of dream world. A door usually appears at some point and when he walks through it he enters a witch's dream. These witches are actually just women who have what is called "Snow White Syndrome". This is not a real life medical condition but it is used as a term for talking about envy. Each witch has some sort of regret or revenge from before they fell asleep and their dreams portray said regrets. Each episode is mostly about him in their dream and helping them get over their regret. Each witches' story is different from one another, some much darker than others. A couple of them have quite surprising endings as well.

You can't really base the whole anime on the very first episode. Every episode is different in its own way which I really like. There are some episodes that are even more "cutesy" than the first and some that a more "gorey" than the first episode and of course everywhere in between. There are some really short but amazing stories that go to each episode, especially episode 7 which is the last episode I watched before making this review.

If you want an anime that has an in depth story that connects from episode to episode then 18if is not for you. But I highly suggest giving it a try seeing how a lot of the episodes have unique and sometimes very good stories on their own. I'll also add that the animation was completely different for episode 7 but it just added to it's uniqueness even more.

If you want an anime with characters that progress and change through the episodes then 18if is not for you. The only thing that has really changed since the first episode is the "witch" of whose dream they enter to save and also a few looks into the main characters' personal lives with not much detail. However I like the little detail they give you. It makes them much more intriguing and makes you want to continue to find out more about them.

Overall, I believe 18if does not deserve a 10/10 for a masterpiece nor does it deserve a 4/10 or 6/10. I truly think it is unique and enjoyable to watch. So based on the low rating this has as of right now on MAL, either I'm seeing something in this that other people aren't or I am seeing something that isn't there.

I highly suggest at least giving this a try up to episode 3.

You might think this is the usual 12 episode anime series with 4 minute episodes to try and promote some sort of mobile game, but it really is so much more.

It blatantly throws in things saying that it's a mobile game advertisement which is pretty funny. Even without this "break of the 4th wall" it is actually a very funny series to watch. The characters and things they do in each episode are very fun to watch. Now to get a little more in depth.

Story: 6/10
It is indeed a game advertisement so no real story to follow through the series. Just the short "advertising attempts" ... from episode to episode.

Art: 8/10
The art was quite interesting, I wouldn't say it's super detailed and that the backgrounds are well done but the style of art fits this very well. I quite liked it.

Sound: 6/10
Nothing spectacular here. Neither good or bad.

Characters: 7/10
The characters interacted with each other very well and they all had their own things that I liked. I didn't hate any of them, they were all great and enjoyable to watch.

Enjoyment: 9/10
Each episode was hilarious. The situations they went through each episode were fun to watch and how they interacted with one another was funny haha.

Overall: 7.2
This should be seen by more people to be honest. Almost every week when I went to watch a new episode I was like "why do I keep watching this, it can't be that good" but after I watch that week's episode I was happy I did. It's just hilarious and has a certain something that makes it more than what it first appears to be. It's only 4 minute episodes so it won't take forever to watch. Definitely an enjoyable short little series that isn't a game advertisement *wink wink nudge nudge*

Note: Before I get into this review, I will say earlier on that this IS NOT a prequel to Barakamon. It doesn't relate to Barakamon in any way storywise.

Now, avoiding the fact that this wasn't much of a prequel for Barakamon and more of a comedy of Handa's high school life, it was highly enjoyable. I would also say that his calligraphy wasn't a big part in it, although it is brought up many times.

There is no main story to follow throughout the series, but each episode has its own story to follow. Each episode usually revolves around everyone completely misunderstanding whatever Hand-kun is thinking/doing ... which leads to some funny scenarios. I even nicknamed this Misunderstandings-kun at one point haha.

Now to pick it apart.

Story: 6/10..... again, it doesn't really have a story to follow but more of a different story every episode with quite a lot of comedy.

Art: 7/10..... it was good but nothing particularly impressive (other than Handa's calligraphy haha)

Sound: 8/10..... the background music for the most part was good, but I really liked the OP and ED. The OP is not what you would expect for this anime but it fit surprising well for me. The ED was nice to listen to as well.

Character: 7/10..... Overall there were a lot of different character types which clashed together fairly well.

Enjoyment: 8/10..... I found many of the comedic scenes highly enjoyable. Especially when Yukio was involved. He always recognized what Handa-kun actually wanted when everyone "misunderstood" him and it was funny seeing his reactions to them haha.

Overall: 7.2/10..... If you are looking for a comedy with no real story to follow that is highly enjoyable, I would highly suggest Handa-kun.

Basically the backstory of how all the main characters in Kyoukai no Kanata met. This may be the prequel to the series story wise but I would watch Kyoukai no Kanata first. Everything will make much more sense in this if you watch the main series first. Plus some of this may be considered spoilers to events in Kyoukai no Kanata.

The story mainly focuses on the Nase family, Hiroomi and Mitsuki in particular, and how they become involved with Kanbara. The majority of the other main characters from Kyoukai no Kanata are in this special as well.

I always enjoy seeing backstories for characters, and this ... special did just that exceptionally well. It was never explained how Hiroomi and Mitsuki met Kanbara in Kyoukai no Kanata which was nice to finally see in this special.

Kyoukai no Kanata was really good in my opinion. It had an interesting premise for a story with a real life and supernatural setting. Not hard to follow but not straight forward as well. All of the characters were likeable in their own ways. Now to lay out what I felt were the pros and cons.

PROS:

-Interesting Story
-Great fight scenes as well as animation for them
-Kept me interested; I didn't feel like quitting halfway through watching it
-EPIC opening and ending theme, especially the ending
-Likeable/funny characters

... CONS:

-Some scenes felt rushed, especially during fight scenes
-There were some small inconsistencies with the story (near the end with Kuriyama and her backstory and how they related to Kanbara)
-The end seemed lacking, I wish it was explained more thoroughly


Overall it's an 8/10 for me.

-This was my first ever review so I have no idea if this is good. I know I just wanted to keep it short :) I hope this was helpful to someone-
