THIS ANIME HERE....
So I watched this when I heard about the reverse harem genre. I kinda like harems so I gave Diabolik Lovers a try and I'll tell you, it's not good.
The first time I watched it, I didn't think nothing of it and just finished it. Recently I re watched it for a game and that when the many cons of this anime kicks it.
First off, it takes a lot for me to hate a character. Before this anime, I've never hated a character before. But the main character Yui, broke the ice. I though the MC of most ecchi harems were dense.
...
Dense isn't even the word for her. She's the special kind of stupid, Stupid beyond comparison. She has more than one chance to escape these sadistic vampires but stays. She doesn't even try. She automatically submits. She's may be cute but that's the only thing going for her. Watching her make her decisions made me want her to die of blood loss so bad. She has no depth and no development. I mean all she is is a blood bag.
Speaking of one-dimensional characters, the guys of this anime are just cardboard cut outs of the same person with very minor and I mean minor differences. They all have the same objective and like Yui, no depth and development.
The story is an abomination. After watching both seasons plus re watching the first, the plot is still not clear to me. She moves in with some vampires and her blood is the good stuff or something like that. I don't even think the creators knew what the plot was. I was hoping that as I was watching that the plot would thicken and come out of whatever mist was stopping it to be seen but it remained. The annoying thing is that there's flashbacks of the guy's early years that have no explanation or brought up again. It's bad enough there's barely a story, now all we get is a quarter of the character's back story? Thanks for nothing.
However in the sea of horrible character and story was a Small row boat of good. The art style was very good. I'm usually not attracted to shoujo anime because the art seems to girlish for me but diabolik lovers has an art style that I found to be more appealing than your average shoujo. It fits the atmosphere of the series and I couldn't even tell it was a shoujo. Not to mention the guys are great looking despite their lack of character.
Another good thing about this anime is the voice acting and the music. This is the series that got me into the voice acting side of anime. Each of the character's voice perfectly fit their characters. Like Hirakawa Daisuke voicing as Laito. Laito is seductive and perverted (they all are but he takes it up a notch...) and Daisuke's voice fits the role perfectly. I think the voices of the character is what gives the boys the tiny amount of individuality they posses. The music is also good. It's perfectly sets the mood of each scene which helped me figure out what's going on in the scene. The theme song is also awesome and made me think the series was worth watching. Too bad the series didn't live up to that standard.
Overall, I'd give Diabolik Lovers a score of 4 and a skip. It has poor characters and plot but the music and voice acting sorta saves it but not entirely. It's like the anime went into a burning building, the voice acting and music saves it but then it later dies of smoke inhalation. If you like to watch painfully stupid submissive main character get biten and abused by thirsty (literally) Vampires with no story and depth than Daibolik Lovers is for you. If you don't, just skip it.
