I was very hyped when I heard about a new installment to the Battle Athletes franchise. The original tv series and OVA were some of the first DVDs I'd ever bought as a kid. Not only do I have a lot of nostalgia for the franchise, but it also appealed to me personally, regardless of its flaws.
What a disappointment this anime is. I cannot give it a fair review because I dropped it after four episodes. Everything about it is below mediocre. While watching, I found myself pausing the anime every few seconds to criticize or complain about some aspect that stood out as poorly
...
done, nonsensical, or outright baffling. It's just full of tired cliches, cut corners, wasted potential and missed opportunities, generic and unfitting environmental design, unnecessary plot points and subplots, COMPLETELY unlikable characters, and gaping holes in what should have been a simple narrative.
Why couldn't this have been a sci-fi sports anime with a mostly female cast? Why is there a goofy evil terrorist organization straight out of later generations of Pokemon, and why does it get so much screentime?? Why does the athlete's training in early episodes consist of camping in the woods and jogging in the mountains, and running on the rooftops of their school buildings instead of cool high-tech equipment and facilities that could plausibly exist for athletes in the far future? Somehow, this anime feels like it wanted to be or was intended to be a completely different story that was shoehorned into Battle Athletes at the last second.
I give it a 3/10; it's closer to a 4 than a 2. I just couldn't watch any more. The story is so stupid and all over the place, and very little makes sense. This anime has almost nothing going for it. The plot and subplots are not interesting, the characters are annoying, it contains surprisingly mature themes yet treats the audience like little children, the animation is a letdown even for a tv anime, and I can't even remember the music. Just don't even bother wasting your time on this one.
