This was one of the first five animes I ever watched(others being, Rosario Vampire, Strike the Blood, Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, and Mermaid Melody), so there will be a little bias because of nostalgia.
Story is meh. It had a nice premise, and some parts were written very well. However, overall disappointing from the standpoint of rewatching it for nostalgia.
The art is good. Not horrible because it's an early 2000's anime, but the animation could be better; however, in my opinion, the animation is better than big series like Bleach. That's just my opinion. However, I do agree that the character designs were bland, but
...
I guess they tried to make it more serious toned. Then again we have series like Death Note that have more serious and "normal" designs; however, they're memorable.
The voice acting was nothing in my opinion. It wasn't good nor bad. Nothing felt cringe worthy. (Note I watch the Japanese dub). I personally liked the music, but that's just my opinion. I do have trash taste in music though, lol.
Fix the characters... The anime would have gotten a significantly higher score if it had better characters. Just for some clarification, Yuki and Kaname are not blood siblings. Kaname is her ancestor, but I'll let it slide because I've seen way too many animes with that kind of romantic relationship. Also, Rima was my waifu before I learned I liked other girls.
This is a guilty pleasure of mine because it holds such a high nostalgic value to me. Even if I've never watched it until recently, I would still say it's still a 5 or a 6.

First off... the visual novel is better than the anime. The anime tried to smush all their routes together in order to make it one linear story. Then they took all the good things about the characters, especially Yui, and they threw it into a fire.
I understand that the premise was intended for the series, so I'm personally going to let it slide. First off, story... trash. Simple! While the game's version of the story is still pretty dreadful, at least it' handled much better than the anime. Plus, Yui actually has a stronger backbone! More blood is worse in my opinion when it
...
comes to story. However, the backstories were decent in my opinion because not everyone who experiences trauma overcome and turn out to be good people; some are just as messed up as their abusers.
The art is pretty good. The backgrounds are beautiful, and the characters themselves are quite pretty in my opinion. (Kanato and Azusa can stab me, and I'll be happy lol). Effects were decent. Though not as pretty as the visual novels.
The voice acting was mediocre- good. I personally like Cordelia's Japanese VA since I believe it fits her character quite nicely. The sound effects...... never again
Characters... all of them can rot in hell and Yui needs to go back to school for how dumb she is. Their characters designs are pretty though, and I do think that some of their backstories were decent... Still burn in hell Sakamakis
I did enjoy a bit of the series, but it was mostly the characters' backstories and not the story itself, that I enjoyed. I will only recommend this to poke fun at it...
Overall, I'll give this a 3 (specifically a 2.7)

This is one series that I hold dearly to my heart, but it doesn't mean I would be bias. First off, time to knock down somethings other users has complained:
"It's unrealistic that Tohru was the "angel" that saved everyone from their traumas/abusive past"
First off, lets explain how Tohru wasn't really the "angel who saved everyone. Everyone saved themselves. They learned to grow by mostly themselves with some influence from Tohru. They learned from others like Machi and people in their families as well. While Tohru does play a big role in influencing the change of the Sohmas/Soumas, she wasn't the carrier of the change. I
...
do agree with, however, that is what unrealistic to a degree. Then again, this is a FREAKING MANGA series; there are very few series that are actually comepletely realistic especially in Shoujos, Slice of Life, etc. even series based on history.
"Tohru is a mary sue... she's little Miss Perfect"
Honestly, while Tohru is your typical nice girl, she still has her flaws. Ever heard of being too selfless it's selfish. That's what she is. She also still envies other characters and recognizes her faults like being weak. Also, she did not leave to live with her grandfather because her relatives hated her. She left because the were renovating the house, and she felt like a burden for staying in a relatively small area that's meant to house her aunt, uncle, cousin, and grandfather while the house is renovated.
"Some of the relationships are creepy, and the ending was a bit rushed"
I do agree that the ending was pretty rushed; however, it was still pretty satisfying in my opinion. The relationships, I partially disagree with, but the build to the relationships were overall pretty developed. The largest age gap we know for sure is with Saki and Kyo's father figure (I forgot his name). Even so, Saki is of age, and the oldest possible age for him is like the thirties. Plus, it's pretty common in Japan.
"The way they handled and abuse was unrealistic and inferiating"
As someone who has experienced abuse and trauma, this was well written for it's time. The cause and effects were pretty realistic. The characters didn't excuse any of Akito's actions, Rin for example, but it doen't mean she should be completely miserable for her entire life. Her mom did get her comeuppance. Everyone still struggles with their trauma, but they've matured to handle it.
"The art is trash"
Okay... now that's really unnecessary. Again, for it's time, it's pretty good. Definitely not as detailed as many other shoujos of it's time, but it's still beautiful. Plus, this was one of Natsuki Takaya's first work, which is amazing on the popularity it got for one of her firsts. I love how Takaya has grown since Fruits Baskets.
"The story was basic"
I would agree to a degree once again. It does have the typical nice girl and tsundere bad boy, but it still doens't entirely fit in the mold. It was somewhat revolutionary at it's time for a shoujo series to include trauma and abuse in the way Fruits Baskets has, even today it's still significant for conservative Japan, that rarely talks about mental health, abuse, trauma, etc.
Now that we got that out of the way. I'm going to say the rest of my review. The characters were enjoyable. Sure there are some cliches, but most were tolerable and/or well done. The ending was expected yet still enjoyable. There's a reason why Fruits Baskets is a shoujo classic. I would still recommend this to summon.

This was one of the very first Shoujo mangas I've read. At the time I was amazed by it since it was one of my first mangas. Now, older and have better resources/series to compare it to... meh. The premise was basic, and the main girl was annoying and overall a stereotypical heroine. The only saving grace would have to be Rei. His story and character development was fantastic. The carrying guilt between him and his brother, his dreams of becoming a racer, etc. It really blew me away. I agree with another user that this would be better as a drama rather than romance.
...
There is a few tv show drama adaptations of this series if anyone is interested "Mars: Tada Kimi wo Aishiteru (MARS~ただ、君を愛してる~)" with a film of the same name and a Taiwanese tv show adaptation. (I'm honestly curious on why there's so many Taiwanese tv show adaptations of so many Japanese mangas. e.g. "Boys Over Flowers", "Prince of Tennis", etc.)
Anyway, sorry that I got sidetracked. I would've rated this a possible 8.2 if it was a drama instead. Rei was so THERE that I forgot about all the other characters except him, which is saying something since Kira is supposed to be our protagonist. I would still recommend this to others.

I'm going to be honest... I never actually watched the series except a lot of clips and the first to third episode. I did however read read what happened in each episode. The art is really breathtaking; it's not like a da Vinci work of art like some other animes, but it's so beautiful and does help with convey some of the emotions of scenes and characters. Plus, let's cut a little slack to Kyoto Animation for one of their first more supernatural series. The story and premise were interesting, but it could definitely use some improvement. Some characters didn't a drastic change, or they
...
did but it was too sudden. However, it doesn't take away some of the more emotionally impacted scenes and the music was fitting in my opinion. The show's weak aspects weren't really that bad in comparison to a lot of the negative reviews. I say specifically 7.4 is a fitting rating of this overall. Pretty mediocre, but it has amazing artwork and good emotions.
Also, this anime does fit more into my taste. Still, lots of things lacking, but it's tolerable.
