I try to watch and rate anime as objectively as possible. However, the quality of an anime must also factor in the subjective feelings of the audience (subjectivity such as emotional responses also allow me to enjoy anime much more than total objectivity). As such, I do not claim my ratings to be absolute or right in any way, only that they are reasonable in my eyes.
At the end of the day, all our opinions and judgements are subjective to some degree. After all, a person is making them.
.....
A few things to consider when looking at my list:
I will drop any series that becomes painful for me to watch, no matter how much better people claim it will get later on. An important aspect of anime (or any form of entertainment) is consistency and its ability to draw the viewer in and keep their interest.
Note that me dropping an anime doesn't necessarily mean I think it's trash; sometimes, the anime just might not appeal to me or match my taste and I don't want to watch it.
Any series rated as a 4 and below is deficient in multiple ways.
A 5 rating is average, meaning the show has neither any outstanding traits or horrible traits. They also tend to not be very entertaining, so I generally I have bad opinion about them even if they are "average".
A 6 rating means the series has some strong points, but they are not strong enough for me to like the series to any substantial degree. These strong points may also be counteracted by negative points.
A 7 rating is an "average", good quality anime. They may not have much outstanding content, but they will end up here if they were entertaining enough. Other series end up here because their good points did not warrant a rating of 6.
A 8 rating means the anime was very good. The anime either had one or a few superb and excellent aspects, but is deficient in others, or was just plain outstanding in most aspects
A 9 rating puts the anime in the realm of my favorites (although not being a 9 does not exclude an anime from being a favorite of mine). These have even better quality, are more enjoyable, or are more entertaining than an 8 anime.
The rating of 10 is reserved for masterpieces. I consider masterpiece to need to be very entertaining, have few to no flaws, and if they have flaws, they must be irrelevant to the anime's focus. If an anime approaches masterpiece level, but have a few detrimental flaws, they will fall to 9 without exception.
A special exception to this rule is that a series with enough emotional impact, however deficient in any/all other qualities can still get any score (excluding 10) depending on how impactful it is.
.....
There is not much standard for me to like something. Any premise, no matter how crappy, can achieve at least an 8 for me if they have good execution. On the other hand, any premise, no matter how good, with crappy execution will be most likely dropped.
"Even a genius will lose if they play the wrong game.
Thus, it is a talent in and of itself to even know the rules of the game."
