So right now I have three episodes left to finish this first big part of Gintama, which means I’ll probably finish it tommorow, but I felt like writing the review for it today. So let’s get down to it.
Story: 7/10
Well, this is kinda hard to say. I mean, Gintama doesn’t really have a complex stroryline or anything as it is just a comedy and parody anime for 90% of the time and there are few actually serious arcs where the story somewhat progresses. But, the story that Gintama has works very well for the comedy/parody genre so I’ll give it an 7.
Art & Visuals: 7/10
Once
...
again, this is mostly a comedy and parody anime so there usually isn’t any superb animation, as there isn’t any need for it. However, when there are occasionally serious fights, the animation is done well, considering that the studio probably didn’t have a big budget for this show. As for the art, I really like it. At first glance, it feels really generic, but the more you look at it, the more you realize it’s actually really unique.
Sound: 10/10
Honestly, Gintama’s soundtrack is awesome. I really like it. Without a joke, one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever seen for a shōnen anime. That goes for the openings, endings and for the normal themes used during episodes. The music is used perfectly and always fits the situation. Whether it’s silly or serious, Gintama’s soundtrack always just fits. As if that wasn’t enough, the voice acting in this show is outstanding. Hands down, best voice acting I’ve ever seen in an anime, and I have to say I’ve seen quite a lot of them by now. Well, that’s no surprise, considering all the big name voice actors that took part in Gintama.
Character: 10/10
This is probably the greatest merit of Gintama. Its characters. On first look, they seem like silly, comedic characters, which they of course are, but they can have some pretty deep and sad backstories that just touch your heart. The characters are original and funny as hell. I personally especially love Kagura and Katsura.
Enjoyment: 8/10
Despite all the good things I’ve said about Gintama, I must admit it also had some pretty boring and not really funny episodes. On the other hand it also had a lot of amazing and hilarious episodes. It really depends on the episode, but in average, I think this is an 8/10 for me.
Overall: 8.4/10 (rounded off to an 8)
Gintama is like a snowball rolling down a hill. When you look at it for the first time, you can barely see it, but when you look again once it has finished rolling, you’ll realize it has turned into an avalanche. Gintama is definitely a strange and unique anime that I most definitely don’t regret watching. I look forward to watching the next parts. You should give this a try everyone. Don’t give up just because it might seem slow at the beginning. In the case of Gintama, patience will bear fruit.
