Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Just to start Phantom Blood for me was epicness incarnate. The only flaw I see is that it was only 9 Episodes, so bash it if you will. The second part, Battle Tendency or Jojo vs. the Pillar Men, continued the generational story of the Joestar family. It wasn't quite as good as Part 1, but I would still give it a 9.5 out of 10. What dragged it down for me was the slower pacing. It was still crazy fun and a freaky good time. To me Phantom Blood was the hook, line, and
...
sinker. Battle Tendency is bait, but is still a masterpiece in it's own right. Let's find out why.
The story is buff like the characters in Jojo's, every line and every fight is epic and they know when to bring the comedy. From Phantom Blood picture a demon kissing your first love. From Battle Tendency picture playing tag with someone's nose who is at the time astronomically more powerful than you and wants to destroy you. Yes, people really die in this and there's no plot armor. There's a taste of vampires (undead) in this, but this is used to give characters supernatural power. I could say more, but I don't want to spoil it. Some of the characters take their names from 70's and 80's rock bands. There's Master Ton Petty, Robert E. O. Speedwagon, Baron and Ceasar Zeppelli (Led Zeppellin), and AC/DC spelled differently. The Hamon is the main type of magic and there's some training and powering up, but the fights are realistic and over the top. No one talks their opponent to death, but it's really funny when Jojo says.. "and next you're going to say" and his opponent actually repeats it. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but this takes the cake. This is just a taste of the enjoyment factor of Jojo's. The characters are well articulated and designed with their own quirks.
The Art style is kind of renaissance esque and great in its own right. The sound is great. The closing song "Round About" by Yes is mesmerizing and is varied at times, "as mountains come out of the sky and stand there." I can see why Warner Bros. wanted a piece of the pie, Jojo's is a classic in my opinion.
In conclusion, each part of Jojo's is a complete story, but it was smart to bundle these two together. Is the story finished? Only the Phantom Bloodlines can answer that question!

The Vision of Escaflowne. Es-ca-flow-nae was a beautiful and memorable fantasy adventure. It's not a masterpiece, but it does many things right. It throws an ordinary high school girl into a parallel universe with the earth (or the mystic moon as they call it).
In this world where they call the earth (the mystic moon) and look up at night at the earth and the moon, mobile suits reign supreme and hence the nearly invincible Escaflowne which can transform. The story was unique, but I didn't like the heavy usage of tarot cards. On the other hand the medallion was a
...
nice introduction. Both kind of fade out in the story as the lost city of Atlantis is introduced and understood. The story could of been extended to perhaps 30 Episodes, it was originally planned to run for 39 Episodes. The events surrounding Hitomi could of been extended and the political state of Gaea. The ending was still great, though shortened, and actually had a surprise or two.
The characters were well developed. What struck me most about the characters is that they all had their own motives, but none of them were pure evil. It also showed how even good people can be corrupted, but if they have pure hearts good can come from it. I thought it was also interesting how they included family ties and family relationships, even generational.
The art and sound was above average, for the before Blu-ray era. It didn't break new ground, but was decent. It was a fun and imaginative anime. It's one of the better series I've seen, and deserves the Great rating.

Medabots was an interesting though strange anime to watch. It was enjoyable, but should you watch all 52 Episodes, let's find out. The first season of Medabots, or in other words, the first 26 Episodes of Medabots are deserving of an 8 Overall, but the last 13 which I watched dragged it down to a 7 Overall. The English adaptation of Medabots switched the order of the 52 Episode original Japanese Medabots or Medarot, making 13 Episodes (27-39) unnecessary to watch. They were mostly filler episodes anyways. The last 13 Episodes (40-52) weren't as good or as fulfilling as the
...
ending given at the end of the first season.
The art was just okay or average. The fights were good but not great, like the classics. The fights were bolstered somewhat by very good sound effects and soundtrack. The Metabee classic beetle mania, he makes a sound kind of like a Popeye laugh. The opening and closing songs keep you craving more.
The characters are very good and well thought out from: Icchi to Koji to Karen to Phantom Renegade. The side characters were given a lot of thought and they never feel like a waste of space or time in this case. The story was complete at the end of the first 26 English episodes, in my opinion. I took a break at the end of the first 13 Episodes, but the story never drags.
I enjoyed this series very much and it's worth a trip to the 22nd Century to watch it!

Guilty Crown is not a masterpiece that is true, but it is a beautiful and fun series. Guilty Crown is not from a manga or light novel, but is an original Production I.G. series (they're the Ghost in the Shell studio etc.) I haven't watched Shakugan no Shana, but it seems they did a bit of a role reversal as Shana could harness the power of torches and Shuu voids. As Shana is a woman and Shuu a man.
The first thing you'll notice is the beautiful musical score and sweeping visuals. The opening song is beautiful with Inori singing, My Dearest
...
and the closing song is cute. I watched this show on DVD and I gave the Art a Great score I can just imagine it on Blu-ray. The fight scenes are beautiful and well executed. The colors and backgrounds are well placed and compliment this rather dark fantasy.
I will adorn this guilty crown, the right to use my friends as weapons. This reminds me of war itself as world leaders use militaries as pawns, but often have admiration for their weapons or soldiers. I actually like Gai Tsutsugami more than Shuu Ouma, he's more interesting and inspiring than Shuu, in my opinion. The story and characters are very good. The story has several interwoven arcs which keeps you guessing. The characters are interesting as weapons are made and broke (hey that's a friend). This brings us to the major flaw or flaws of the series, the ending. The ending is abrupt and only partially ties up loose ends. Also, watch this show on Blu-ray if you can, because the ending on DVD is distorted and you miss about a minute of it. The ending is only about half an episode. Luckily, I had a combo pack and switched over to Blu-ray. It's beautiful so definitely watch it on Blu-ray.
The enjoyment is high, it's not that long of a series, and it's well worth your time. It could of been a classic or masterpiece with a better ending, so some people give it a bum rap. Just have fun with it, that's why most people watch anime anyways.

Dragon Ball Z, I first saw most of this series when it first aired on Toonami. I later watched it on DVD. Warning: The Frieza saga on DVD, about 5 episodes were blurry. I now own it on Blu-ray where the distortion was corrected.
Dragon Ball Z, continues the chronicling of Goku's or Kakarot's life. He meets many of his Saiyan brothers. He meets the being who destroyed his home planet of Vegeta. He finds the origin of the dragon balls and their protectors. He fights many interesting beings such as Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu amongst
...
many others. He meets interesting people such as the Kai's, the androids, Majin Buu's good half, Dende, Kami, and someone named Trunks.
The art and sound was good, but doesn't really shine, especially not on DVD. The story and characters, really shine. But I'm most impressed with the amazing action scenes and the level of detail in them. The fights are a bit drawn out, it seems at times like they're trying to talk each other to death. I recently bought Kai and this might help this problem (Dragon Soul). The characters and story provide meaning to all the training and powering up. Goku and Vegeta both have families to protect and tournaments to win. Go away Hercule, "It's now officially national goof ball day." Krillin Quote
The Dragon Ball series and Gundam series are the best gateway anime series. Why? Because they are in my opinion, the best anime series Japan has to offer. If you are new to anime, a fence sitter, or a veteran these series won't let you down.

I saw a little of this series on Toonami, but I couldn't make sense of it, such as: Why is Goku little? Why are they in outer space? I later watched it on DVD and it fell into place for me. Dragon Ball GT isn't cannon. I watched this before most people, me included, didn't know or care. This was one of the first series I watched about ten years ago.
This series is all about fun and finding the Dragon Balls in the cosmos. Why because the Dragon Balls got scattered across the galaxy. The
...
series is fun a lot like Dragon Ball, but lacks the character depth and perhaps relevance (now with the cannon Dragon Ball Super). It's not a waste of time, if you liked Dragon Ball you will like GT.
The art is on par with the other Dragon Ball titles. The sound is great as I love the opening (my second favorite song in the Dragon Ball series).
You can skip this series, it's not cannon, but you'll be missing out on a memorable galactic adventure. Also the ending is satisfying even though Akira Toriyama didn't write it.

Dragon Ball. I saw most of this series on Toonami, before I watched the whole series on DVD. They're so cute at that age. This series chronicles young Goku as he travels the globe searching for Dragon Balls following the death of his Grandfather Gohan. He befriends many people and gets trained by the Legendary Master Roshi. He soon finds that if he collects all 7 Dragon Balls, he can get 1 wish granted by the Eternal Dragon.
*Very Mild Spoilers
The story is great, but what makes the story really shine is the many characters that Goku befriends. They
...
all add depth to the story and you grow attached to all of them. For example Goku meets his future wife Chi-Chi, Master Roshi does inappropriate things but loves his pupils, even top villain Piccolo and his connection to the Dragon Balls, as well as the many friends who Goku meets.
The art is good it doesn't really shine, but it is decent enough. The sound is great though, from the beautiful opening (my favorite from all Dragon Ball series), to the catchy closing theme it will keep you glued to the screen.
In conclusion, if you're looking for action, adventure, with a little comedy this is your ticket to the World Martial Arts Tournament. Dragon Ball is the foundation for the rest of the series.

ef: A Tale of Memories and Melodies. This will be for the first and second seasons of ef or pronounced f. Both ef and Baccano I'd rate the same about a 8.0 to 8.5. They're both very good anime series but fall short of true greatness. I'll tell you why plus why ef is a must watch like Baccano.
ef is a classic anime from a stand out studio Shaft, also known for Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Each story Memories and Melodies is a separate story with connected characters. My major complaint about the series is the story and characters
...
were not in depth enough. They delve into backstories a little bit, but is it enough as main characters are swapped in the 2nd Season. On the flip side, all of the characters had challenges and it was good seeing their progress and laughter. It was also nice seeing some of the same characters carried over to the second season. The art was good and the sound was great. I thought the OP songs for the first and second seasons were excellent and set the tone for each.
I think ef is a classic or a must watch anime, because it does a good job at getting its message across. Such as the transcience of life, the importance of relationships, love, and being understood. It's also a visually appealing work with great sound and music.
It falls short of true greatness because of the story/characters, which is my major complaint. Another reason, perhaps minor is the half episode rant. If you watched it, you know what I mean. I believe that this was needed, but why did it have to be half an episode, seriously.
Overall, this was one of the better series I've seen. It was made a few years before Madoka Magica and like Madoka is a classic.

Witchblade is one of the first anime series I saw. The art and character models are nice and detailed. The sound is engaging and the opening song is very good XTC. The story and characters are fair to good. The story and characters need more depth. The story and characters are interesting and enjoyable, but I feel as if there was wasted potential and that the ending was abrupt.
The art and sound are very good, especially the art and visuals. These two factors help the enjoyment factor, though the characters and story are just decent.
Overall, I thought
...
the series was good and well deserving of a 7.0 or 7.5. I sometimes compare this series to the cartoon series Spawn, because both people are cursed, in pain physically and mentally, and have family they love. It's interesting to see how differently the man handles the situation (Spawn) and how the woman handles the situation (Witchblade). Neither story resolves favorably, but is worth the ride for the drama, intrigue, and action.
Worth noting, Spawn also has a live-action movie and Witchblade also has a TV series, both worth watching.

Okami-San and her seven companions. This was a cute little anime series. The story and visuals were a little lack luster which hurts the enjoyment factor. The sound or music was a bright shining star in this anime. The opening and closing songs are very good.
The story is cute which does a play on the two female main characters being red riding hood and the big bad wolf. The story hints at altruism versus selfishness. It deals with how far would you go to help a friend, but remember to protect yourself, ideals, and interests.
It's a schoolyard/fairy tale/love story.
...
It's eye candy with punch drunk love. Now it seems like I'm in romance with it. It is a fairly enjoyable series. It lacks a deep story and characters, but it is an enjoyable romp through the woods and perhaps middle school. Middle School is the toughest grades and young teen age woes. It's worth a watch perhaps with a parent and child or just for being relatable and fun.
