Sorry if I'm being a bit too brief or if there's some grammatical errors, I'm typing this on mobile rn.
The art style holds up from 1995, from the background design to the musculature of the automated limbs. The fluidity and attention to detail are so sharp.
The music feels somewhat timeless to me as it captures the feel of a brooding future city of incredible technology and poverty. It still slaps.
The story goes places I still think are fascinating, the puppetmaster is very charismatic in their explanation of consciousness and human/AI rights. I hadn't really thought about them much when I was that young, so it opened a door for my curiosity.
The Major in this is a very different interpretation to the original manga, and the choice to depict her as more robotic, almost drowning in the weight of her augmentation was a refreshing choice from becoming cyberised and having all your problems just go away. Reinforcing this into the fluidity of her movements and facial expressions really worked for me. There's a strong feel of a cost to augmentation, which not a lot of films from that time really expand on. Finally, the ending to me is a perfect bow on top. The themes of thesis and antithesis throughout the movie finally come to a climax of synthesis? That's a choice, and I think it works very well. It's not so much a happy ending, but it leaves a lot of new threads for you to think about as the credits roll.
This film really impacted a lot of what came after it, so it's nice to see how its impacted the development of the cyber genre as a whole.
I know they keep remaking this into different movies and shows, but nothing to me beats the original. It turns 25 years old today and it's still entertaining.
