Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Anime) add

I went into this anime thinking that it must be the best show of all time because of its glowing reviews, expecting nothing less than a definite top 5 anime that is memorable for all eternity. Maybe this is why it was such a disappointment for me.

Story: 8
The story ends up being very good once i had watched it all, i can look back and say that yes there are good moments throughout this series. The problem is that for me was that it takes WAY TOO LONG to tell the story, probably 30 out of the unbelievable slog of 64 episodes could be completely ... removed and you wouldn't miss anything important, especially in the beginning where really nothing of importance seems to happen for about 15 episodes, its just introductions of characters while the story has not really even started yet (properly). But in the end when the pieces fall together i can sort of forget (actually i think i really just did) the empty parts and piece together a good story.

Art: 3
The art style can not be described as anything other than simplistic, static and just plain detail-less. Every scene consists of an obviously hand-painted static background with the characters being animated with 10 polygons and 3 colors, boring and just not fun to look at. I get that it was made in 2009 but im watching and reviewing this in 2020 and its just dreadful to watch. The animations are good and fluid, its just the drawings that are pure piss.

Sound: 3
I cannot remember a single piece of memorable in-scene music from this anime, not a single one. That to me is a glaring issue since music can really elevate an already good scene into something that can never be forgotten. Sadly this is not the case and i have forgotten most of it. Sounds and voice-actors are good, just not great and the lack of music makes it a huge turnoff.

Character: 7
The different people and story lines are nicely put together in the end with some great character development in between. This is one of the better features of this show and ties in greatly with the story part, but it too suffers from the unreasonable runtime of 25 hours.

Enjoyment: 4
I had been told by many people that this is their favorite anime and that "pretty much anyone" will love it, well i kept watching around 1 episode a week because i really didnt feel like watching and kept wondering when the good parts start. The good parts did start at the latter half of the series but didn't last for long. It was one good episode in a bunch of 4 background slow slogs. It took me literally months to watch because i kept doing other stuff and had to find excuses to watch this, i kept telling myself it will be fantastic but it just wasn't. I think the feeling of having my time wasted is an unforgivable sin in anime and this is what i mostly was left with for the majority of the episodes.

Overall: 7
Maybe i should rate this lower since my average score of the components is at 5 instead of 7, but i think this is where this sits well. I can look at the better parts and know that i did watch a good story and fondly remember the better parts. BUT ultimately my time was mostly wasted, i would have rather just watched something else.

TLDR: IMO its a waste of time and is nowhere near "the best anime of all time" that many people call it out to be.

Lets start this review off with stating that i disliked absolutely nothing about this show, it is just pure happy wholesome fun to watch and it honestly made me happy.

Is the story amazing with twists and turns? No, obviously not, its basically just Rimuru's adventures in the great Jura forest and its surroundings. The man (slime really) wants only for everyone to live together in peace and is not afraid to use their power to achieve this.

Very few shows have consistently just made me happy and made me smile throughout it for no particular reason but this series does it, there really is no reason ...

Let me tell you a story, a story of how every single episode in this series works out:

First grumpy Jotaro and his fellowship of idiots (unenjoyable idiots) arrive at a new location and seek food or a place to stay the night in, then a "mysterious" and "funny" person appears and they wonder if this is an enemy stand user??!? OH NO, IT IS AN ENEMY STAND USER.

The enemy then shows their immense power that the main protagonists can do nothing about and then get their asses handed to them. End of part 1, because every single encounter is divided into 2 episodes to waste ...
