JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable is my favorite part of JoJo. From a technical perspective David Production is again firing on all cylinders. Art, music, sounds, and voice acting is all quality. Again, only watch it subbed. The story is pretty clean, there is a hiccup in the general arc of the plot with the arrows and everything, but not enough to annoyingly noticeable. The stand powers are cool and the characters are fun, if not super deep. Kira Yoshikage is my favorite JoJo villain, maybe that is because he reminds me of one of my friends. Regardless, I like the small
...
town setting and the small town stakes. I think if JoJo can keep creating interesting setting then I'm gonna keep watching.

This is the only anime to be on my favorites list that doesn't have a 10/10 score from me. "Why is that Pastor George?" I hear you asking. Good question dear reader, but honestly you could probably just scroll down and find out. I find the concept of mechs and the story surrounding the teenage pilots in this anime to be fascinating. All the technical stuff is great too. The art, sound, voice acting (dub,) I greatly enjoyed. The story itself starts off as a pretty generic mecha affair, but as the kids grow and become more aware the story gets a lot better. The
...
mechas became secondary to me as the relationship between the kids became more interesting. Unfortunately, all of this crumbles as they reach near the end of the show. Once it gets past a certain point the show jumps the shark and it becomes terrible. It's sad, because of the potential, but I could easily see myself rewatching this and then stopping at a certain point just to preserve the good memories. I heard that the manga has a better ending, so I'm gonna read that eventually.
Also Ichigo is my waifu. Not haters please.

This is my favorite comedy anime, and it isn't even a contest. Prison School is a satire of the over-sexualization of Japanese media, and specifically anime. It presents all of the boys as horndogs and all of the women, save one or two, in completely sexual terms. Every time one female character speaks the camera is nearly always focused in on her breasts. Which I don't think is "fan service," in the way that it is normally presented. I think it is done to call attention to how ridiculous and over the top manga/anime can be with this type of stuff. The boys at the
...
center of the show are cookie cutter in their own way, but each of them is unique and you remember them. Especially Gakuto. This is another anime that can only be enjoyed with the dub. The conclusion kind of sets up for a second season, which seems like it won't materialize. This is a good thing though it seems like this anime was very much a "lightning in a bottle." Whoever was at the top creatively deserves an award for bringing this manga to anime in an effective way.

The second part of Stardust Crusaders is slightly better to me than the first part. The first part is great, but I think the addition of Iggy into the plot and the minor amount of growth that we see in the characters is what help this season stand (kek) above the other one. I also think that Araki and by proxy David Production got much better in their ideas of how to present Stand battles in an interesting way. We get even less big lugs duking it out, and when they do it feels earned. It was a satisfying conclusion to the arc and you

had one of those rare moments where you don't feel as though anything needed to be added. I think this is season along with the first part of Stardust Crusaders is a great place to dip your toe into. Unfortunately, I also have to suggest you watch the first season which is not nearly as good as these two. But it is worth the slog.

The first part of Stardust Crusaders is great. JoJo really hits its stride in this season. Most agree in this assessment, because the addition of Stands was a good one. The art and sound are top notch. I love the soundtrack and how each character was given their own theme, it is a really nice touch. David Production really knocked it out of the park with this one. One of the aspects that I liked about this show that isn't really talked about is how low the stakes are. Yeah Dio is a bad guy, and yeah they gotta stop him, but it isn't like
...
he is trying to rule the world or anything. This first part on their way to Egypt has lots of entertaining Stand battles, and I appreciate that these battles aren't always just two big lugs fighting it out. Of course the comedic aspects of the show is one of its biggest selling points and those definitely don't fail to disappoint. I never care about sub vs dub, but if you are watching this show dubbed, please do yourself a favor and switch. The Japanese voice acting is so good, so hammy, and so over the top that it is legendary. A must watch.

This is my favorite anime so I thought I might as well write a review for it. I consider this a perfect anime, not only because it nails all the technical stuff right, like art and sound, but also because it is able to present a simple premise in a compelling way with compelling characters. Mugen, Jin, and Fu are all great and memorable characters as is their quest to find the samurai who smells of sunflowers. I'm pretty partial to stuff set in the Edo period so take that bias into consideration, but I think it does a good job of blending Japanese and
...
American culture in a way that doesn't feel intrusive. You're in the Edo period, you know you're in the Edo period, but for the hip-hop stuff feels natural and non-intrusive. Easy ways to screw that up, but they didn't do that. So good on them. Being able to combine story and action seamlessly, while at the same time remaining grounded is a hard thing to do. This anime is great and should be on everyone's must watch list.

This cerebral work was pretty fun watch and a good way to spend half an hour. The visuals are definitely dated. This came out in the early stages of 3d animation mixing with 2d and it does not work well in this at all. However, I can overlook that due to the early nature of the medium in this case. The best thing about this is the story. It doesn't focus on mechas or action, but instead tries to tell a love story that is seperated not only by distance, but also time. I think it was pretty sweet. I think it would have been
...
complimented by a stronger and more definitive ending, but we didn't really get that. As always it is just nice to see something, anything, that is different than the usual drivel that we are fed. I think that this could have easily been adapted or extended into a longer series and it would have kept my attention which is more than I can say about most things.

Well I finally finished Steel Ball Run and what a fun trip on Mr. Valentine’s Wild Ride. This is the first manga that I have ever read for more than five seconds so I don’t know what is considered the norm for this genre. But I do love JoJo’s so I can at least appreciate it from that angle. Overall this was a pretty fun story with lots of good moments, but it also makes me realize that a lot of what I appreciate about JoJo, and what most people appreciate about it, has come about due to the excellent anime adaptation done by David
...
Production.
The story is fantastical enough to be a JoJo tier story. A horse race across the United States. Of course it is revealed that it is so much more than that. And that it is actually about trying to gather up the pieces of Christ’s body. Referred to as “the saint.” The Japanese don’t really understand Christianity, like, at all. At least on a popular level. So, no one is shocked or surprised that Christ’s body exists in the first place. But again it’s JoJo so you just roll with these things. It was funny to me and so I got lots of laughs out of it, even though that probably wasn’t the intent at all. There were some JoJo tier twists that weren’t foreshadowed at all, but Araki impressed me a few times as well. I really liked how Dio was defeated for instance that was a good twist. It starts slow but the story really starts to pick up around Volume 10, and it rides out pretty well to the end with just a few boring parts. I didn’t like Araki’s use of constant flashbacks though. Wish that he could have told the story more succinctly without them.
The characters are good. The standouts are President Valentine and Lucy Steel for me. The two main characters Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar are good too, but they have a lot of boring stuff happen to them. I remember reading about Lucy Steel and President Valentine and being really interested and then it just switching over to them and I was like, “oh yeah these guys exist.” But like everything else they get better as the story progresses. I still think Johnny is a great Joestar, because he has to deal with this physical impairment. Unusual for characters no matter the genre. I also appreciated that he and Gyro entered the race for more selfish reasons, but by the end they didn’t even care about winning, they just wanted to stop Valentine. That’s some good hero building.
The stands. This is probably my biggest criticism of the story. Stands are really important in JoJo’s and I think Araki as he writes more, feels as though he has to create more interesting ones. They felt overly complex and there were times when a whole fight would pass by and I had no idea what the stand’s powers actually were. I did appreciate that the big bad’s stand didn’t control time. That has been a running theme (don’t know about part 6) and I think it has been overdone, so I’m glad Araki didn’t do that here. The whole golden rotation thing made no sense to me. And I think it serves as an example of how David Productions actually does a good job adapting these things in anime form for dumb dumbs like me. Couldn’t understand the manga, I’m sure I will understand the anime when/if it is ever released.
Lastly, the art was good. I don’t know how to judge it in terms of other manga or even JoJo manga, but I have read a fair bit of comics and this art was really good. The character designs are peak Araki and peak JoJo. It’s fun and I enjoyed how over the top everything was. Par for the course, which is a cut above most things.
All in all, I’m glad that I read it. I can’t say I’m necessarily inclined to read Stone Ocean or JoJolion or any of the other parts, but I did enjoy it. I think if you’re a JoJo fan and you want to read it, you don’t lose anything by it and it’s a good way to kill the time while waiting for them to announce Stone Ocean.

I could only get up to the episode with them finally "defeating" a certain enemy. It was so insulting to my intelligence that I had to stop. You can tell why this anime is liked, because its basically "baby's first 'serious' anime," and I don't want to take that away from people, but it is so tonally disjointed that any serious thing it is trying to say is undercut. From a technical standpoint it is good. Animation and sound are all very good. Unfortunately, that is about all the praise that I can sing it. Are there occasionally good scenes? Sure. But not enough to
...
make up for all the stuff you have to slog through. Scar was the only interesting character to me. Mustang was as well, before they neutered him. It plays into the "killing villains makes you a villain," anime trope that I just can't stand. Fine, but it felt insulting to my intelligence so I just couldn't finish it. I'll eventually get to the 2003 anime adaptation which I heard does a better job addressing these problems, but I need to wash the bad taste out of my mouth first.
