Often novels introduce unnecessary elements or plot points that don't contribute anything to the main story and
simply end up bloating the overall plot narrative. HimeHimo does the opposite, everything is relevant to the plot,
every little thing that gets mentioned is relevant in some way later down the line.

HimeHimo is more mature than many other novels I've read, and certainly a lot more mature than ... almost any light novel I've read.
The world of HimeHimo is dark, bleak and the overall situation of the Dungeon City is hopeless.
The city is overrun with gangs, drugs, prostitution, gambling, murder, and child trafficking to name a few.

The protagonist of the story Matthew is a real scumbag that engages in numerous unsavory things; and doesn't shy away from things like
thievery, murder or even adultery even though he is currently a kept man for Arwin the crimson princess knight.

Arwin the princess knight is trying to conquer the dungeon with her party to rebuild her fallen kingdom.
Matthew while being weak with no combat abilities to speak of secretly helps out Arwin and the town in her absence, while she's out trying to conquer the dungeon.

The plot of HimeHimo follows Matthew and the numerous interactions he has with various people to indirectly assist the princess and the people he meets. To make up for his lack of strength he is not afraid to use various dirty tricks nor to get his hands dirty. Despite not being a mystery novel, the story contains various small mysteries that pop up throughout the novel with various clues spread out throughout the novel to clue you in about a situation before a big reveal happens.

The worldbuilding is fleshed out, deep and shows you what is going on rather than telling you.
The novel treats its readers like adults, and it succeeds at it with flying colors without coming across as edgy.

Without going into story spoilers if you are looking for a dark fantasy plot with deep, fleshed out but flawed characters and a slight bit of mystery sprinkled in, HimeHimo is an excellent read that is well worth your time.

You may have come across something so vile and twisted that you feel a bit
of your sanity slipping away as you indulge in something truly grotesque and
disturbing. Ibitsu happens to be a perfect example of this as it draws you in
with it's truly messed up story.

Story

Ibitsu tells the story of a girl called Madoka being groped on a train by
... the main character Keigo who happens to have a fascination with creating
lifelike dolls. From this incident the story spirals into a dark psychological standoff between dignity ,lust and companionship.

Madoka blackmails Keigo into living with him and they end up sharing a
symbiotic relationship where Keigo is allowed to use Madoka as a model for his doll making while frequently Madoka forces him into some very questionable and messed up SM(Sadism and Masochism) situations with Keigo being forced into the masochistic role.

Despite nudity being prevalent and being portrayed erotically the dark and foreboding atmosphere keeps you on your toes and makes you weary rather than aroused.

The main characters from Ibitsu all suffer from deep psychological wounds
that form who they are as people and only begins to touch upon how messed up and deep the relationship between them truly stretches turning into something akin to a convoluted mess.

The side characters only aim to add fuel to the fire and don't bring any
form of relief to any of the main characters and only adds more to their misery.

Art

The art itself is dark and this greatly adds to the overall atmosphere of Ibitsu.

The characters themselves often have their faces shaded darker than other manga while the backgrounds are usually drawn quite dark and simply without much detail unless specific objects are meant to be emphasized. This adds to the foreboding feeling that something is just waiting to happen.

Enjoyment

To say that reading Ibitsu brings more displeasure than enjoyment is an understatement. Ibitsu is just not the type of Manga most people can enjoy , yet you still find yourself captivated by the sliver of beauty that it shows every so often.

Overall impressions

Ibitsu is not for everyone and not without it's flaws and if you cannot handle things like urine drinking , public humiliation, BDSM (Bondage and Submission) , nudity , sex and overall depressing events befalling main characters then I advise you to stay away to maintain your sanity.

However if you can accept if for what it is I would recommend this one to the more messed up crowd.

Basic plot outline

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! tells the story of Satou Kazuma who is a shut in that dies in quite the pathetic way and ends up getting transported to a fantasy world.
In this world he has a choice to have any weapon , skill or talent , however he ends up choosing an idiotic and slightly more than useless goddess to be his companion.

Ecchi - It contains fan service and often shows the girls in provocative ways.

Comedy - The comedy is very gag oriented, and tries to play on the fact that it goes against the norms.

Romance - Slightly touched upon , however never the main focus and unfortunately never really develops past blushing.

Action - It contains fighting , however more in a comedic sense ,, and whenever
it takes the serious approach it usually breaks all the build-up of tension for comedy relief.

Harem - A guy adventuring with 3 girls who all have a crush on him... Yea it's a harem.

The setting of Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! takes place in a fantasy world which contains many elements that are prevalent in RPG games such as
monsters , quests , guilds , XP , dungeons , boss monsters etc.

If you like this type of setting then you will be in for a treat simply because it takes these elements and turns them on it's head and then asks them to start yodeling while blowing fart sounds from the rear.

It incorporates the setting very well and does so in a funny way. This just adds to the enjoyment , and never fails to keep you entertained.

The 4 main characters from Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! really help
shape the novel into something that can be seen as a lighthearted and delightful read simply because of how they stick out like a bunch of misfits who have more than a few screws loose.

Aqua is a goddess of healing and specializes in being an idiotic goddess who enjoys party tricks more than doing anything constructive despite having quite a few talents not too apparent to herself.

Darkness is the typical knight who happens to be a masochist who wants nothing more than being covered in slime or being ravaged by monsters.

Megumin is a loli arch-wizard who loves explosions more than anything else
in the world and would most likely choose explosions above eating.

Kazuma is the main character who has to deal with these bunch of idiots
and would like it nothing more than to get rid of them (Who could blame him)
,unfortunate circumstances that keep crossing his way prevent him from doing so.

Plot

The plot progression is almost non-existent as the plot is clearly
not the focus of this novel. The main sliver of a plot that the novel contains
is that Kazuma must fight and defeat the Demon Lord in order for the goddess
to return to "heaven" and for him to just live in peace.

It is an overused plot that many other anime/light-novels and manga have followed,
the difference is that Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! often shines
because it doesn't try to take itself seriously.

The art that the LN contains is well drawn and is colorful while still being soft on the eyes. It complements the story well and allows the few images that the novels contain to accurately portray the comedic as well as ecchi moods without focusing too much on either.

Quality of writing

I cannot comment on the original source materials writing , however the fan translation unfortunately suffers from many flaws that detract from the enjoyment.
It often is victim to very broken English as well as many grammar and spelling mistakes. If you can get past the bad translation quality and want a funny and enjoyable read then this will not fail to meet your expectations.

Overall

Some of the character troupes have been used before and some jokes are
recycled and lose their shine after a few times, however there is still
enough variety to make it funny and entertaining.

The plot doesn't really go anywhere except for defeating of bosses which
do not seem to have any importance to the story despite the story claiming
them to.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! contains nothing new or groundbreaking,
however it does do well to incorporate many different forms of comedy and troupes
to make it one enjoyable ride.

I have read the first 4 volumes of the Light-Novel series and would
recommend it for anyone who enjoys comedy and doesn't mind it being put ahead
of any plot or plot progression and overall just wants a nice fun read without
having to think too much.
