Most romance anime within a modern high school setting tend to be pretty forgettable to me unless the pair in question happens to be out of the ordinary. Such is the case with both of these sweet romance stories about opposites attracting. Ore Monogatari!! follows Takeo Gōda, a muscular student who plays the knight in shinning armor for a short girl named Rinko Yamato while riding the bus. The romance happens almost immediately while Lovely Complex takes a slightly longer route with an equally unlikely couple. Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Ōtani are considered the ultimate comedic duo in their class due to their many 'lovers' spat' arguments poking fun at each other's height. Risa is the tallest girl in school while Atsushi is the shortest boy! Can both of these couples make it work between them? It's certainly worth seeing for yourself! Especially since the manga for Ore Monogatari!! has yet to be fully translated despite being complete.

At first glance, both manga appear to have an ecchi focus to them in regard to a particular sexual fetish. However, it wouldn't do either work justice to limit the content to mere eye candy. The protagonists of both works suffer from unbalanced lifestyles due to bad relationships, bullying, or feelings of ineptitude or inadequacy. This stress gives way to adopting a form of fetish as a sort of ritual. Nana to Kaoru in particular explores several different forms of bondage without stepping over the line most would consider extreme while also being somewhat educational. Nozoki Ana focuses on exhibitionism and voyeurism, using them as allegories for how people try to hide their own true feelings while attempting to expose one another's. Both works do an amazing job of capturing drama without overloading the reader with meaningless fan service.

Both are adaptions of dating sim VNs that handle the dilemma of who the protagonist ends up with in a similar manner. In most VN anime adaptations, either the protagonist only ends up dating one possible heroine or all girls pursue and no one wins. Here, the protagonist romantically pursues each girl after their "arc" has ended. It's not cheating, but rather a showcase of alternate realities in which the protagonist chooses someone else. Great for those who want commitment or dislike harem endings.

Both are 4-Koma (4 panel comic) comedy manga with female protagonists aiming for romance. The comedy is mostly centered around misunderstandings which I found to be very entertaining. Both also have plot progression so not slice of life.

Both the film and TV series were conceived by Hayao Miyazaki using early concept elements for an adaption of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In both instances, a boy and girl are traveling together to uncover the mysteries of a lost civilization while being pursued by an evil organization.
