family dynamics and lots of talk of bonds/relationships with people. both somewhat lighthearted style but with with a fairly heavy dash of drama. Lots of weird antics and interesting world dynamics ft. mythological creatures, kappa, tanuki, and tengus. i took similar approaches to both, where even if the characters seem to have weird and illogical thought processes, you just kinda gotta shrug and accept that there is an emphasis on symbolism and story elements rather than their actions in response to certain events. For example there are many times i was annoyed by the main character being friendly with the antagonists in uchoten kazoku, but i understand why because of the type of anime its trying to be. both have enough action or events to keep you interested, but u rly gotta just not ask question with either of them and go win the flow or you might get annoyed haha

The premise holds very similar between these two shows. However, darker than black has just a slight edge more of a gritty mafia movie vibe, with its dark city scape, involvement of police force, and 'syndicates'. Overall though, Towa no Quon offers a similar experience as darker than black. You have children with special abilities, mysterious organizations, and all the cliche character mini arcs and tragic backstories that you could expect from a good tried and true japanese anime. However, I'm dont mean this in a negative light. Both shows give me the same feeling I had when I first started watching anime. Coming back to these shows the second time around, I knew the cliches and the storylines and the plot twists, and I knew they weren't quite comparable to the absolute masterpiece, deep, intricate shows I have found and refined my tastes with over the years, but there's something nice about just sitting back, and not thinking too hard about what to do, or what to watch next, and just appreciating the feeling of a show that reminds you what hooked you on anime in the first place. And I think both these shows embody that very well.

They both have a somewhat fantasy setting and involve slaying a dragon. But more than that, they are both shows with extremely likable characters and strong character growth. I think they are both sort of "hidden gems" of the anime world as well. If you enjoyed one, I recommend trying the other.

Want to watch something that makes you gasp at crazy twists and leaves you curled up in a ball with your mind reeling at the end of every episode? These two are it. Both are full of excellently done symbolism, drama, and tension, as the characters navigate complex interpersonal relations with a backdrop of a larger existential world crisis. Not to mention the literal parallels of 2 boys driven into a quest-type adventure for a younger sister. I wont elaborate for the sake of avoiding spoilers, but it's uncanny how similar the paths and roles the characters from these two shows walk. Both are great, but I'd say with Mawaru Penguindrum, be prepared for more 'weird', and with Zetsuen no Tempest, be ready for more heavy on the 'angst' and 'drama' side.
