Unrealistic. Formulaic. Mundane. On-the-nose. But absolutely precious.

If you aren't developmentally stunted, watching SoL anime about kids (and probably for kids) becomes an entirely different experience from your twenties and onwards. A lot of anime is, unfortunately, teenage-boy-fantasy-projection garbage which I cannot fathom at all, certainly not anymore. Instead this is a kind of vicarious parental fantasy for me. I'm looking at these children interact in wholesome ways and it makes me want to root for them. I rejoice when they conquer these caricaturized childhood melodramas we are familiar with, because when we were children these melodramas were anything but 'melo'.

I'm about to pop my review cherry just like the main characters after the credit roll.

I have just noticed something important. Anime and manga that take place in certain time periods often include the period as the first word in the title, especially when it's relevant to the story. That had gone over my head until now. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Hence it is unfortunate that the synopsis fails to mention that the 'Taishō' in the title refers to a time period because most of us wouldn't know what or when that is.
