Well, I’m basically an ordinary computer science student that enjoys watching some anime on my leisure time, not so fancy for a hobby, I guess (?). Anyway, since science is somehow so horrifying for some, I would not to talk about it; rather, let me just introduce you about my point of view towards anime.
As one of embodiment of art, anime is surely a colorful world with its wide range of spectrums and styles. Given this fact, a monochromatic point of view is far from adequate to appreciate this sparklingly colorful world. Yet, being aware of this fact doesn’t necessarily enable you to enjoy every part of anime, since everyone has their favorite color. With that line of reasoning, I don’t think any enforcement to follow a certain paradigm or taste is justifiable (freedom is the life itself! Don’t dare you to take it from others!)
That being said, while taste and genre is fully personal preference, I do believe there’s a general agreement towards quality. I mean, we do admit that Mozart is a genius even though we may prefer a more jazzy and groovy one, don’t we? I think anime, more or less behaves in the same way. Before we talk about how I rate an anime, one thing worthy of mentioning is I don’t believe in such thing called “best” or “worst” anime, because they are nonexistent (yes, absoluteness is indeed a delicate lie!).
Now, to the core of this introduction, I'll explain how I rate a certain anime. To be honest, determining a quality of an anime is a rather delicate and sometimes troublesome work and I’m no way an expert in this kind of thing. But that aside, I do have my own reasoning and somehow I quite believe in my taste and intuition, hehe. My method might quite differ from others, and I’m in no way saying it’s best, but at least I think it’s rational.
First of all, I don’t think a single set of criteria (for example story, art, character and music) can serve as a general evaluation criteria (though, I agree they’re helpful in general). For example, how would you rate Tsumiki no Ie with these criteria? Quite impossible, I guess. Hence, I found it helpful to place myself on a more general perspective. Just as the wise Holo once said, if you can’t understand from your current perspective, you gotta look around.
When I watched an anime, I tried to see the “intention”. Indeed, I’m being vague with what intention means. To put it simple, it’s the value that the anime is trying to realize. Intention plays a large part in my calculation. A good anime always had a value and often, a positive one, even though it’s covered in negative tone. Shiki might serve as a good example how a positive value is covered in negative tone. A value is an anime’s heart, it might makes you ponder in thought, it might makes you nostalgic, it might makes you have a wider perspective of life, it can even makes you “understand” a certain “emotion”, sometimes it makes you simply happier. Without a value, it is no different from that daily courtesy that has no real meaning nor influence. That being said, this criteria is the borderline between bad and average/good anime.
Intention that coveys the value is important but by no means the only factor. The second important criteria is how creative is the value conveyed. Creativity comes in many forms, whether it art, character, music, nuances, narration, or any other that sometimes hardly imaginable. Tatami galaxy is one with such good creativity. This criterion makes distinction between average and good anime.
That’s it. Well what? You’re not satisfied? True that I don’t dictate you the details, since what I described is two general ideas that could become a template to guide me in determining anime quality, the details will be specific to the anime itself; isn’t it the reason we take a roundabout approach rather than taking the usual story-character-art-music set?
Oh, you might ask me why my average rating is so high? You might say that my scoring is bogus and too generous; that’s fine, everyone can have their opinion though. But one factor that might affect my scoring is because I’m a picky one. I just don’t watch anime that not into my liking and I also tried to omit watching anime that I’ll surely give a low score; mainly because I just don’t have too much time for that. So you might call me a gem seeker! If you’re generous enough, let me peek at your gem too!
