I think all the gym enthusiastics will be thrilled about this one. Gym based and wholesome rom-com manga of two young gym-goers. What more could be needed?
Our mc is a Bulky and good natured college student Kataoka who meets a new employee, Shiina, at the gym he goes and he just
can´t take his eyes off of her. Why? Bacause she is a bit chubby and he happens to like chubbiness, although she denies her appearance to be anything like that.
This is a chubby wholesome manga for gym-lovers across the lands far and wide. There might not be any significant explanations about how-to-do-weight-lifting-movements (like in "How
...
Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift?") but it seems that this story is more about being a rom-com about two gym-goers rather than info-heavy-specialist-deep-explanation -manga.
This creation is pretty much for three types of readers:
1. Gym-goers who like romance.
2. Gym-goers.
3. Rom-com enjoyers, who would like a reason to go to the gym.
However, I like to recommend this for other reasons too. Art looks very good, characters are likeable and it´s good to see that more gym-themed mangas are getting room to be noticed. It´s a new kid on the block but I hope it will get a fairly long serialization.

After finishing this already a very short show I can´t but find it a bit funny and sad how it might have more to offer than most main stream or other vice high-profile shows that we have seen over the past couple of years. Admittedly the premises being "two girls are having a chat" is not a very high stakes of a story, but it is the feeling of realism that wins you over. That and the quality of those chats.
Plot is simple: two girls meet at the food court and talk over all kinds of things possible. If you are expecting some deep and
...
meaningful conversations with buckets of drama, you might find it in a form very familiar to you. Reality is reflected in these conversations reminding us how some of the best memories we had could have been from those small moments with our best friend, as you could literally talk about anything and without masks. While having a snack of course.
Yoshino Aoyama is voicing Yamamoto, young yet mature gal who plays the straight man of the duo. We get a solid performance with slight grin as she mainly is the listening party of the two.
Hiyori Miyazaki is voicing Wada, young and definitely the one who wents out the jokes. "Who starts a conversation like that" could be used describing her. For Miyazaki´s first actual leading role we get a multilayered performance from lows to riches and I truly wish we can see more of her work in the future. She has talent and here is her proof.
Watching this duo is like watching "Rush Hour". One serious but relaxed and the other yapping like there is no tomorrow. And I loved every moment of it. Great casting choices, for these two work together like it was meant to be.
If you want to spend - as the show is finished for now - a couple of hours just emerged in a something that could be like watching a pod-cast, this might be for you. A short break from it all with a company of friends. And maybe a snack on a side.

Pack your most comfortable clothes, lift your legs and relax as you are given a heartfelt invite to enjoy the best service the Earth´s greatest -- and only - hotel has to offer!
Yachiyo is a robot made to serve as a hotelier at Galaxy Tower hotel in Ginza. She is everything you could ask for: highly motivated, polite and aims to make customers stay most pleasant! However, there is no one to serve. Humans have fled the planet and there is absolutely no idea when or if they will return. Regardless, Yachiyo continues to do what she was meant to do; be at service at
...
all times. Patient wait is finally rewarded the most unexpected way and thus empty days of wait are changed to days of adventures small and big as the hotel shall become a beacon of interest to customers far and wide to visit. And of course one way to make their stay memorable is through good service.
Apocalypse Hotel is a funny and interesting surprise this year. It could have very easily become a critical lecture about human irresponsibility and incapability to take care of their own home, thus abandoning it and moving to next one and maybe repeat it again. Instead we get a unique story about loyal robots doing their jobs regardless if someone is watching. Always ready for customers, always ready to serve. It doesn´t need or want to lecture in it´s stories but instead offers us a comical ideas and crazy ways to work around them. In other words, it is here to entertain us.
Yachiyo faces the many challenges of running a hotel and has to stretch her AI-program as much as possible to find a solution. Thankfully she is not alone. Small Flycatcher robot, a fast-mouthing Environment Checking Robot, a whole family of Tanukis and many more wild characters are there to offer what ever they can to help.
As much as I would love to give hints or funny remarks about contents in these episodes I don´t dare. You wouldn´t believe me anyway and it felt great to go completely blind in to this series from which you couldn´t fathom the slightest what it might throw at you. Character design is good, stories are interesting and the not having any idea about how things will be solved is never a bad feature.
In case you are looking something a bit unique to watch give this one a try.

Teasing master Takagi-san has been a great soul-healing experience over these great years we were given with it. A story about a young duo of a boy and a girl in a coastal town living their youth whilst competing in different kinds of games. That´s it.
Boy challenges the girl out of frustration of constantly losing to her and she gladly accepts every time with a gentle smile.
The only thing that changes is pretty much the weather. And that´s occasionally.
Definitely a manga for those looking to slow down their heart beats and to relax, maybe remember your own childhood and gently laugh at things you did.
...
This is like seeing one version of an ideal youth, when you were without care, actual problems or anything that could be considered truly stressful. These are stories of two kids enjoying themselves and we are there to enjoy it with them. It´s almost like reading a small Atlas of "Over 100 ways how to pass time with your friends" or something. Even as an adult, I took notes.
This piece of manga is perhaps one of the most wholesome creations we have been given and if you are not careful you just might find yourself re-re-re-reading these stories many times over. That´s a lot of times, bring snacks.
For those wanting something that is completely wholesome, holds no stress or cliffhangers, and you are guaranteed to have a gentle and kind time while reading it all.

Moomin - or Muumit, however preferred - is something of an everlasting phenomenon for it´s lovable round characters, easy to follow stories and music that lives rent free in the heart have someway or another left a soft spot in our very souls making us feel that much more at easy when we see or hear about them.
Have I ever been more in love with Japanese language than when looking at the information board and found the word "iyashikei" or "soul-healing" as marked theme for the series, giving me some arrogant idea that perhaps the word was created with Moomin in the mind. Who knows,
...
but that much I dare to amuse myself.
"Muumeilta elämää oppia voi" (eng. translation roughly "You can learn about life from Moomin") goes the ending lyrics in the Finnish version (based on the review section there are quite a few of us here). And lyrics don´t lie for most of the episodes and their pancake smelling stories every now and then hold a bit of a harder theme around them like hopelessness, mid-life crisis, greed, fear and such. While holding it´s tongue for preaching about right and wrong the stories play themselves out leaving the viewer to come to conclusions about what happened, why it happened and could things have gone differently. You can only learn about life by living it.
Moomin should be protected as an important piece of media meant for everybody. It is not really a secret that children and adults don´t find it difficult to return every so often back to the Moomin Valley and revisit the beloved world that has been there to shape child- and parenthoods since what feels like a forever ago. Your´s truly is going to keep that legacy alive and I hope you all join me.

A man who gave up his dream and a girl afraid to chase hers. He is by nature serious, loud and energetic. She is shy, quiet and deeply insecure. One could see this mix to only end in a disaster, but what if they are meant to bring out the best from each other? This is essentially important in a relationship of a coach and an athlete who both aim to the top, who aim for the medal.
Child athletes and their struggles are a subject that barely get any coverage, mainly ´cause it might be a bit hard to handle. "Medalist" however deserves full-marks in
...
character presentation, story-telling and sports performances as it takes a look at a figure skating and what goes around it. Handful of child characters, their thoughts and hard work are presented beautifully in the performances they give in the icy ring leaving us viewers hold our breaths during every hop, leap and spin they make while we are hoping to see all of them succeed. We are given via different trials a very real picture of what is happening inside the head of a 11 year old child who wants to aim to the top. Even better is that we get to see it from viewpoints of many different kinds of characters.
We have geniuses, hardest workers in the room and late bloomers looking for that one chance. These are groups of people even experienced artist might have problems of keeping at least somewhat interesting not to mention unique, yet after only 13 episodes it is safe to say that Tsurumaikada-sensei succeeded to bring out what was needed on the paper and from that Studio ENGI brought it to TV-screens to enjoy.
This is essentially a show about kids so keeping the focus on them and not treating them as extras was always the right move and thus gives respect to those young athletes who aim to the top while giving us a gentle reminder that even tho they are kids they are humans too.
If you are looking for a sports anime, appreciate a bit over the top reactions especially in the humor department and don´t mind characters that might remind youself in your youth, give this one a go. Even if those qualities are unnecessary this is regardless a very well made show with a lot of re-watch value.

Like it´s name "Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My charms" and with the main character named Mona Kawai, one can easily expect a very much pastel-natured rom-com; easy on the eyes, no chest hurting drama and aimed to make you feel good.
The premise is pretty funny as the female lead is a very cute, kind and heavily narcissist female holding everybody around her delicate fingers and she is trying to charm a plain looking man aiming to become a maidenless monk. And boy if the Queen Bee ain´t having it with a thirteen in a dozen lad buzzing in his own rhythm.
Mona is on the
...
surface just perfect in every single way from her looks to smarts and being the most loved person ever just by existing. Yet deep down she is not sweet like honey, more like bittersweet chocolate for she NEEDS everybody to love her. I´ts like that´s how she gets her energy to live. A bit of a cold shoulder is more than enough to break her mentality and nearly bring out her true face, the one she wants to keep locked away like Pandora´s box. She is quite funny when holding back her real thoughts against people getting on her nerve.
Then we have Medaka Kuroiwa, who´s name said fast sounds almost like "mediocre". Lookswise he would never stand out in a group of hundred men, his numbers are pretty average, coming from the sticks to big city makes him nervous and thus very unsocial. There is absolutely nothing that would you consider him being a leading male in a romantic manga - I´m looking at all you pretty boys since forever- yet despite all THAT... the number one girl can´t stop thinking about him.
Opposites attract, anyone?
As said before, this is pastel-like rom-com anime with good vibes turned on. The situations these two end up are amusing and watching their little game of "what-on-earth-is-he/she-thinking" is holding pretty well.
Ah, to be young and confused.
Ps. I recommend the manga for comparison. Ran Kuze sensei´s work has some very good looking shadow effects.
