I agree with some others that Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom is quite overrated.

First of all, I had the feeling that this anime was a little pretentious in that it seemed that everything was over-exaggerated. In less eloquent words, the central theme of this anime is "yeeaaahhh, we're assassins isn't that so cool? Look at all these stoic killers and gangster UHHH SO COOOL"....
This very much restricted me bonding with the characters, and there came a point where I didn't even care what happened to most of them, despite the fact that I was SUPPOSED to.

The story both annoyed and entertained me. ...

Trigun (Anime) add
Trigun is one of those animes that goes beyond expectations. After watching One Piece and Rurouni Kenshin, I thought I was well acquainted with the typical 'protagonist who doesn't kill', but no character has MASTERED this persona like Vash.

There is a back-and-forth between serious and comical that I find has been perfected in this anime. I was initially under the impression that this was an anime in which no violence or mature content would be shown in any form, and I was under that impression for a LONG time--about half-way through--and then it got deliciously dark... like 85% dark chocolate dark.... mmmm

Cowboy Bebop (Anime) add
I normally hate anything with a futuristic theme, but this was different. The setting, art, and music are all outstanding. There is a strangely relaxing flow to Cowboy Bebop that makes the series just fly by. Each episode I was more focused on the setting than the actual story, but the story was good enough for me to watch every episode, which is saying a lot.
