The basic premise and presentation are evocative of Whedon-san's Firefly, right down to the stand-alone nature of many of the episodes and the lamentable yet appropriate brevity of the series' as a whole. Interactions between the characters are always lively and engaging, and no part of an episode is ever wasted. Everything, even the music, works together to tell the stories of the bounties and the cowboys alike, each episode dovetailing to form a richly populated universe that serves as the stage for the members of the Bebop in their struggles to come to terms with their pasts, their comrades, and their woefully meager cash ...

The aged 'cute' art style contrasts sharply with the amount of brutality that is depicted, seeming on the surface to fit better with the slice of life sections, but this only goes to show that Higurashi cannot be judged by appearances alone. The tone for the whole series is set in the first minute of the first episode, a jarring and potentially upsetting scene of violence that is followed up by what is, in my opinion, one of the singularly most appropriate theme songs for an anime since Cowboy Bebop's 'Tank!,' and if memory serves, the story then backtracks and picks up a seemingly serene ...
