My friend who saw the anime first told me that I shouldn't really bother; it's okay but not that interesting. I was binge watching a bunch of series and decided to go ahead and watch it anyways.
I'm glad I did. The story itself is pretty decent, interesting enough to keep you watching for sure. It is very creative and I don't think I've seen anything like it. Everything about it was fairly good/average, except for one thing.
The characters in this show are wonderfully written and the character growth throughout the series is so outstanding it rivals some of the best anime I've seen.

If ... you are considering watching this show, I would recommend it purely for the characters. Watching them overcome everything and growing as people was by far the best part of this otherwise good/average show.

The manga is also good and I would recommend it as it is not that long.
