Although Perfect Blue is a darker, more psychological film, it shares many themes and filmmaking techniques with Millennium Actress, including a narrative that cleverly uses match cuts to weave reality and fiction together, and protagonists who are haunted by decisions they made in the past. Viewers who enjoyed the narrative structure of one of these films will very likely enjoy the other.

Bottom-of-the-barrel examples of how *not* to make media. Nonexistent plot and character development, blatant plagiarism of other works, and some of the worst animation ever seen. The unintended hilarity this creates will leave viewers laughing for all the wrong reasons.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
add

On a surface level, both series involve a weak young girl who is contacted by a talking creature and asked to become a magical girl who will be tasked with combating evil forces. Over time, the girl meets allies who help guide her, and her desires and ideals are challenged by the tasks she faces. Although Madoka Magica features stronger character development and a darker, more thematic narrative, many of its basic concepts owe a great deal to Sailor Moon, and it is worth watching both of them to fully understand their collective impact on the medium.

The direction that UBW takes in its second season (transitioning from a rather standard action/adventure series to something with a darker, more psychological twist) is reminiscent of NGE. Several scenes in UBW are direct visual homages to NGE that viewers who have seen both series will recognize. Additionally, both series feature main characters who grow into their role as a hero with the help of those around them.
