NGE was not cliche, more than that, it started new anime era and a lot of cliches goes directly from this show. By the way, NGE is not about big robots and such stuff.
Madoka is like NGE from "mahou shojo"-genre. Starts like typical Sailor-Moon stuff, but than it is on. Such atmosphere, music, breaking from genre bounds, and two monthes of waiting and guessing, what will be in the end.
Thus, both NGE and Meduka are exactly non-cliches titles.
