I have just finished watching Overlord II and I still cannot figure out what its plot is. Other people writing reviews for the show seem to understand what it is all about. Maybe they read the manga, maybe they connected the dots themselves by some mystical work of wonders. I could not do it (well, I have some hypothesis of course but... it's just a shot in the dark). And that is why, despite the pleasing aesthetics and the AMAZING premises, I find this show utterly dreadful.
To me, a person who never read the whole manga, this show is just a series of scenes showing
...
the same characters in different situations without any meaning to it. I spent 90% of the time wondering "Why are they doing that???". Nothing is ever explained or even hinted at. While the show has PLENTY of dialogues, I mean, a lot! All of them either are praises for our Lord the Great One, or a series of pathetic exchanges of pleasantries. In the end, I stared at the screen thinking "So what?": everything they "build" across all the episodes is never used.
The main character does not have a clue about anything and all other characters are mono-dimensional and boring. Some even incoherent with themselves, failing to even be mono thematic. Some are barely introduced and then killed or dismisses without much ceremony. Especially in the first arc... which I assume should have been sort of heart-felt by fan? Well, it gave nothing to me. Lord Ainz also gives explicitly contradicting orders to his subordinate for this fight. I cannot tell in detail without spoilering what happens so I won't, but you will understand when you see it.
Battles are more hinted than actually fought. They dismiss opponents with a couple of quick blows and that's it. I'd rather have had less battles with a deeper strategy than a plethora of insignificant skirmishes that are mostly outrageously one-sided.
This is the only one single show that - among all anime I watched in the past years - most blatantly failed in telling its own story.
