Both series are Shonen Jump titles that don't adhere to the edgy, action-packed reputation the magazine has garnered; instead, these series embrace the naturally weird and wonderful world of the creative arts. Though very different narratively, with Act-Age focusing on acting and Genkaku Picasso focusing on illustrative art with a splash of psychology, both series fully embrace their artistry and decide that reality should not be the limit.

Though tonally different, with Cells at Work being a high-stakes action narrative and Saint Young Men being a humorous slice of life narrative, both series have the wonderful quality of being entertainingly educational. Reading about the fights in Cells at Work familiarise you with the inner workings of the human body, whilst the funny skits in Saint Young Men introduce you to concepts in Christianity, Buddhism, and Japanese culture.

The core idea or both series are the same: in a world full of magic, the unmagical main character must literally brute-force their way through life using their comically outrageous strength. Though the two series differ in their approach to the subject, both have excellent command of comedic timing and are overflowing with fun energy.

I'm Sakamoto and Cromartie High School both specialise in absurdist comedy in a high school setting. The main characters create comedic scenarios in different ways; Sakamoto has so much charisma that he can seemingly warp reality to work in his favour, whilst Kamiyama is the only character with more than two braincells but slowly loses them over the course of the series by way of osmosis. Though I find the incredibly short chapters more effort to read due to reduced story flow, I actually prefer Cromartie High School as it utilises this quality to continually build punchlines on top of each other, meaning the more of Cromartie High School you read, the better it gets.
