My recommendations:
Serial Experiments Lain: Futuristic mindfuck, made in the 90's, and predicted a lot about the future of the internet that came true, and more stuff that's probably still to come. You can watch it 100 times and it's like a new anime every time. Will fuck up your mind. Complete anime, so you don't have to read manga to finish the story.
Haibane Renmei: My favorite anime of all time. Best anime ever made, imo. Starts out slow for character building, but is a short anime, so doesn't take much time investment to get to the parts when shit hits the fan. Also a complete anime, though the ending leaves room for your own imagination.
Texhnolyze: Also by Yoshitoshi ABe, like the first two listed, an underground dystopia controlled by the mafia in the future. Very good watch.
Aku No Hana: A boy steals a girl's gym shorts, and gets seen by a vindictive girl who threatens to tell people what he did if he doesn't make a contract with her. Maybe my second favorite anime ever. There is manga to read afterwards, but even if you don't read the manga, it's still worth the watch. Like really worth. Kuzu No Honkai level of fucked up high school romance, except even more fucked up and scandalous and intense and amazing.
