Digimon Adventure 1999 was not good. A prototype for 02 but without any of the subtle character writing that makes 02 such a masterpiece, with a soundtrack consisting of such memorable tracks as "oops! all Bolero" and "oops! we made a slow rock ballad instead of battle music," and with such great characters as "what if Ken, but instead of a scathing commentary on parents who treat their kids like accolades to show off to their friends, she was instead the most boring person you've ever met" and "guy who cares about his family ... slightly too much, but has no other character traits." (Though do I somewhat forgive 99's Yamato for being boring, because his seiyuu was seriously hauling ass. The anime doesn't deserve such a great performance.) It also had a movie, Bokura no War Game, which had a few interesting ideas but was overall an animation showcase.

Digimon Adventure 2020 asks the sorely-needed question: What if the show was actually good this time?

For newcomers, this anime is one of several adaptations of the FGO mobile game. It adapts the prologue (Flame Contaminated City Fuyuki) to the first arc (Observer on Timeless Temple). There are also anime for the sixth (Divine Realm of the Round Table Camelot), seventh (Absolute Demonic Front Babylonia), and eighth and final (Grand Temple of Time Solomon) chapters of this arc, and another telling an original story that slots between the interstitial Arc 1.5 (Epic of Remnant) and Arc 2 (Cosmos in the Lostbelt). Though no anime yet exist, manga adaptations are slowly adapting the remaining five chapters of OoTT and the five chapters ... of EoR.

So here's the thing.

The Fuyuki anime isn't as bad as you've been lead to believe. It makes some rather bizarre changes (including, sadly, cutting a fight between two characters who in the OVA consistently get excellent sakuga), but it's a perfectly serviceable adaptation.

...The main problem is that you might as well just read it in-game. It doesn't have much new to bring to the table; it's just a direct adaptation of Fuyuki Singularity, except cutting the explanation of what Masters and Servants are as well as refusing to tell you anyone's true name except for Altria's. Camelot's second half and Babylonia both have truly epic sakuga and sound design that makes watching the anime worth it even if you already know the story; First Order is kind of just Fuyuki again.

That said, Fuyuki is a pretty damn good prologue, so if you haven't played FGO yet it's definitely worth watching. Especially for Caster Cú Chulainn who is SO COOL.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho/A Place Further Than The Universe is a slice-of-life anime pretending to be a good anime.

The characters are good but...that's all it has going for it. It may just be the worst anime I've ever seen. Yes, worse than Prisma Illya, which though it commits many terrible crimes (sexualizing child characters, mostly) actually has an interesting plot most of the time. Yes, worse than Magical Girl Site, Wonder Egg Priority and Spec-Ops Asuka, horrible magical girl shows that at least have some interesting ideas behind them. Yes, worse than Assault Lily Bouquet, which may have been a nothing show but, again, ... at least it had some interesting ideas. APFTTU has NOTHING. All it is, is four characters and some mildly pretty backgrounds. Which wouldn't be so bad if it didn't pretend to be more. The premise of the first half is patently absurd (the show wants you to think that there's no way you can visit Antarctica as a minor, which is blatantly false, you can get passage to the Peninsula easily enough - it's British territory, admittedly, but all the characters have passports anyway so that doesn't matter much, not that Antarctic territory claims are even legal anymore). Throughout its run it references a mystery that the show has no interest in solving, nor even treating as a mystery in the first place! Rather, it just lurks in the background as unrelated shit happens, until the very last moment where it goes decidedly unsolved (but the writers think it is).

TL;DR: I want to take these four characters and lift them into a much better show. Even RWBY, hellish zone of terrible writing that it is, would be a better place for them.

It should be noted that if you're anime-only, it is impossible to watch this in order. It fits between Pseudo-Singularity IV: Salem, which does not have an anime, and Lostbelt 1: Anastasia, which also does not have an anime. If you actually want the story leading up to this, play the gacha, it's available in English. (Though I'm told the Babylonia (Singularity 7) anime isn't half bad if you ignore the camera's butt obsession and a subpar final boss fight.)

Moonlight/Lostroom is a beautifully directed and animated character study of Ritsuka and Olga Marie. There's not much of a plot to speak of besides this, but ... it's well worth your time. And again, DO NOT WATCH IT unless you have finished Arc 1 of the game's main story, and preferably Arc 1.5 (though I note that you can completely skip the Agartha Pseudo-Singularity - and should, because it sucks).

Why did I watch this again?

Oh right, I was watching Star Twinkle and decided to watch the crossover at the appropriate point. That was rather stupid of me.

It's just . . . not a good movie. The character moments hard carry this movie that otherwise is not that great. The action (i.e. the main reason people watch PreCure movies) starts out okay but becomes severely subpar in the final quarter, the story has a few utterly idiotic moments, and to balance out the good moments with three consecutive series' pairs of lesbians, there are Annoying Duck Times in which the movie-exclusive character does absolutely nothing ... and still winds up being the subject of focus.

Don't watch it. You're wasting your time.

"Hey, you know Stardust Crusaders? Remember the fight everyone says is the best one? D'Arby the Gambler, right? What if we made a whole series out of that?"

Such is the premise of No Game No Life. The ecchi sure exists, but you will be too busy gawking at the ridiculously high-stakes "fights" to care (the Kill la Kill principle - if you disliked KLK as of episode 3, this anime is probably not for you). The anime is beautifully drawn and you just won't be able to stop gawking at how ridiculously extra the games and their players can be.

Also, there are no less than ... three JoJo references in a one-cour anime.

There are only two reasons why you might dislike this anime:

1) You don't like Kill la Kill. (Understandable, have a great day.)

2) You don't want to watch a dead anime out of an ongoing light novel series. (Understandable, have a great day.)

If neither of these apply to you, then let's begin the game. Aschente!

Magical Girl Site is an exercise in disappointment.

What could have been a not-perfect-but-at-least-good series was ruined by a mangaka who had no idea what planning ahead meant. It feels less than cohesive.

It's a shame. The designs are solid, the story could have worked if it was actually planned (and a certain set of pantsu was removed from the plot). And every time a character fundamentally completely changes with no explanation, and every time a plot thread gets abandoned, I think of this and am disappointed.

The good parts of this anime are the romance between the two lead characters and the character designs. The bad ... parts are, well, most of the rest of it.
