Though Welcome to the NHK's Satou technically isn't an otaku, he does start producing an eroge and is a hikikomori shut-in. I would say that whoever watched whichever show might be interested in the other even though the style, narrative and humour are completely different.

Both depict the life of Otaku, in Genshiken's case mostly male otaku with a few girls thrown into the mix, in the case of kuragehime it's a community of female otaku.

Both are very deep, and make you think. They have somewhat similar theme, but the setting is very different. Lain is no doubt a series to be enjoyed for every NGE fan that was attracted by NGE's psychological scenes.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena

When watching revolutionary girl utena, it somehow made me feel like "This is kinda like NGE but for girls" Both have in-depth character analysis implemented somewhere inside the series, and the style of them is similar. Both have metaphors and symbolism, and some parts/things that make you think a bit. However, NGE's Angel fights have been replaced by sword fighting in utena, and there are some other differences aswell, but they have the same feeling when watching, at least near Utena's end.
