The Another Birth light novels correspond to the very first series of four .hack PS2 games, not .hack//G.U. -- here's the Wikipedia page for the original tetralogy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.hack_(video_game_series)

I didn't read its manga. I read .hack//Another Birth, a series of four light novels (Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine), probably its first set of light novels, whose plot corresponds to the PS2 .hack// games, and is not in any anime. It takes place after the first anime series (.hack//SIGN), and actually is told from the perspective of a different character compared to the PS2 games.

I enjoyed these novels a lot. I also watched .hack//SIGN, the prequel to .hack//Another Birth. It's a slow-paced mystery, often atmospheric. I didn't like it as much, but it may help if you go into it expecting it to be a slow-paced mystery.
