Do you like Kiyohiko Azuma? His early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Azumanga Daioh came out in '99, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole series has a clear timing, eccentric sense of humor, and a new sheen of slice of life genre that really gives the manga a big boost. He's been compared to Arawi Keichii, but I think Azuma has a far more lighthearted sense of humor. In '03, Azuma released this, Yotsubato, his most accomplished manga series that is still ongoing to this day. I think that manga is his undisputed masterpiece, a manga so comforting, most people probably don't care about the plot continuity. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the author himself.
