They are similar in aspect that both are adventure anime in which the main 2 characters go from country/city to country/city, meeting new people on their journey. The biggest difference between the two is that Spice and Wolf also features a romantic plot between the main 2 characters.

The two are similar in that both are sci-fi(also fantasy in the case of Vampire Hunter D) action-adventure stories with a rather powerful main character, who is covered in mystery and leaves an impact on the people he meets.

The reasons the two are similar is because of their focus on individual missions, that don't have much in common other than the characters who complete said missions.Another common aspect of the two shows is that the main cast is mostly if not fully made out of girls from varying ages. The difference is that in Gunslinger Girl the girls are an experiment to create good assassins, while in Princess Principal they are spies who do their job mostly out of free will.

Both of these anime have a main cast of characters that consists mostly of female characters.

Both are to be considered noir anime, starring female characters and giving off almost the same atmosphere. They both include assassins, although in Princess Principal the assassins are also spies. So if you want noir action with spies or the mafia look no further.

Both are anime about a witch getting implicated in the war of the normal people and both treat the war in a realistic way(except for the witch part), having a realistic usage of weapons and realistic thinking from the people.

The main thing in common between those two anime is the fact that the main character goes to a fantasy world where he gains an incredible power. Re:Zero is more psychological and Zero no Tsukaima is more of a harem, romance but both of them have good action. You may find it annoying that those main characters don't try to go back to their main world, but in the end both series are a lot of fun.
