Both are historical epics with Great protagonists who after a life of killing live to redeem themselves.Vinland Saga is like Kenshin in Europe,of course with the necessary changes.Vinland is in Medieval Europe and Kenshin in Feudal Japan.Both respectively focus on the European Vikings and Japanese Samurai culture.Both have real life historical characters in them and what makes Kenshin and Thorfinn stand out among other redemption characters are the unique way in which they go about earning their redemptions. Here's the main thing now.The Kenshin OVA and Vinland Saga season 1 focus on Kenshin and Thorfinn's past lives.Unlike the OG Kenshin Anime which has comedy the OVA is very much darker without any comedy.So the tone won't be different from Vinland.If you want to see their redemption arcs then you can read the RK manga or watch the OG anime both are amaizing just don't watch season 3 unless you really want to,it's filler and for Vinland Saga you can wait for season 2 or read the manga which is also a masterpiece.

Keep in mind this is FMA the much darker anime not FMAB.The reason I think FMA and NGE are similar is purely psychological and philosophical.Both anime deal with despair and depression.Both explore topics as dealing with hopelessness and no matter how harsh the reality is you must try hard to earn peace.FMA and NGE also teach us that the twisted truth of the world is not something we can grasp so we must always have our own truths to keep us away from falling further into the pits of despair.
