If Maison Ikkoku was the romance of Showa, Toradora was the romance of Heisei, then we might have got the romance of Reiwa, and that is BokuYaba.
Not very far ago back in early 2010s the common question of romance genre is: what is the point of telling the story of a boy and a girl, when everything is literally already been written? Well think about the context of mood after Toradora and Clannad.
But thanks to Tsuki Ga Kirei, there is a revival of contemporary romance, which talk about romance in contemporary context, followed by Teasing Master Tagaki-san, and popularised by Kaguya-sama.
Do you realise that
...
I almost bring up a third of all time greats in romance titles? Because romance in general is easy to write but extremely hard to excel, tropes are extremely common, and come by easily. Almost each great title in romance anime has something that stand apart from the others in the genre.
What is the strength of the show? Characters development, storytelling, storyboard writing, OST and cinematography would be it. BokuYaba does have its relative weakness of course, lighting could sometimes gone too far, robbing the subtlety of this series, oh and yes the first 3 episodes of S1 if you think it is a problem. Set aside the issue which might bother you, this show is going to stay in the list of masterpieces of romance, in 10 years time, or in 20 years time.
