The unfortunate for 2024 - Alya is probably too late for the ride.
Among the competition for the Great Romance anime for 2024, Kadokawa had great hope and does bet heavily on Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian (Alya), and hope that Alya can win THE spot for light novel category. Grounds are tested in 2020 (remember key date), light novel officially commissioned (with great illustration of course) in 2021 and manga in 2022, attempt to multiply the commercial effect and push as much (and early) as possible in the competition.
And then the obvious animation was announced in March 2023 and planned for April 2024
...
release, there should be enough time for everything, right? And then on 19 Feb 2024 (again remember key date) they announce that they have to delay airing till July 2024.
It turn out that the animation by CloverWorks is great, with a hint from the 12 specially designed ED, that they want to hit the level delivered by Tagaki-san, and from the results itself it also bring great commercial value to Kadokawa.
But that’s it, you can see all the different opinions around but at the very basic level, Romance genre had started to move on but Alya did not move far enough to earn a place in the discussion of Great Romance Anime.
And my view is that Dangers in My Heart has changed some part of the successful formula and Alya’s production team need to bide time to change. You can even note that the title of Alya’s 4th episode is neither coming from the manga nor light novel, but explicitly from the episode from Dangers aired right before Alya’s delay is announced.
As it turns out, better plot and better characters writing from Makeine (which is not shy admitting ideas adapted from Dangers) from the season is better appreciated and it’s eventually Makeine which won the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! for the year of 2024.

Race of THE romance anime in Summer 2024 - Makeine as an effort to deconstruct and reconstruct contemporary romance (2017-now), and being the ultimate winner.
Amamori, the writer of the series took with him Tsuki Ga Kirei, Tagaki san, Kaguya sama, and Dangers in my heart, these 4 fundamental blocks and made the bold attempt to reconstruct the genre, and the animation team hit the right note to deliver it.
Signs that the set up and characters are all coming from these 4 anime is just everywhere: Nakumizu is a writer protagonist who is very rare, right? It is Azumi from Tsuki Ga Kirei who has this

setting in the first place in contemporary romance; Literature club and how to use OST are coming from there as well.
Yanami Anna has its name and the big eater setting from Yamada Anna (Dangers in my heart), the food sharing pattern is coming from her as well. Asagumo is obviously a pun on Tagaki, even her name, which transliterated as Morning Cloud, is probably a tribute to Asahi, which transliterated into Morning Sun, which is then the production studio of both Tagaki San and Dangers. The list can go longer and longer but let’s stop here.
What have made Makeine as a successful show is that Amamori took all these with him and delivered something different and non-trope-y: to look into the losing side of a love, and unleash the ups and downs, all those emotions and struggles of people involved in front of the viewers.
The production continue on the this with great OST and good use of photographic language. Good anime and look forward to a S2.

If Maison Ikkoku was the romance of Showa, Toradora was the romance of Heisei, then we might have got the romance of Reiwa, and that is BokuYaba.
Not very far ago back in early 2010s the common question of romance genre is: what is the point of telling the story of a boy and a girl, when everything is literally already been written? Well think about the context of mood after Toradora and Clannad.
But thanks to Tsuki Ga Kirei, there is a revival of contemporary romance, which talk about romance in contemporary context, followed by Teasing Master Tagaki-san, and popularised by Kaguya-sama.
Do you realise that
...
I almost bring up a third of all time greats in romance titles? Because romance in general is easy to write but extremely hard to excel, tropes are extremely common, and come by easily. Almost each great title in romance anime has something that stand apart from the others in the genre.
What is the strength of the show? Characters development, storytelling, storyboard writing, OST and cinematography would be it. BokuYaba does have its relative weakness of course, lighting could sometimes gone too far, robbing the subtlety of this series, oh and yes the first 3 episodes of S1 if you think it is a problem. Set aside the issue which might bother you, this show is going to stay in the list of masterpieces of romance, in 10 years time, or in 20 years time.
