Ladies and gentleman, we have achieved peak writing.

As you can read from the title, the main character is a vending machine. BUT, he literally has only the functions of a vending machine, so no psychic powers, no telekinesis, heck even no ability to speak! The main character has LITERALLY became a vending machine. Watch him communicate using preset sentences like "please insert coin", and defeat monsters by using Japanese vending machine products. We do hear his inner thoughts and he does have self-repairing and magic barrier ability, but still it is impressive to see an inanimate object promoting Pringles for its own survival.

For such a ... silly premise characters surprisingly have character, they have goals in life and it is fun seeing them on screen every time. This anime even teaches you with different types of vending machines found in Japanese history, but obviously don't expect anything deep, this is a story of lighthearted adventures of a man content being a vending machine. I advice this anime for anyone who have watched their fair share of isekai, and want to see an interesting take on this trope. As a bonus for watching this show, you'll be able to insult your average isekai MC by having less personality than a vending machine.

Don’t let High Score Girl fool you with retro games, because it is one of the best romance show I have ever watched.

In terms of retro games, the anime shows neat things about multiple retro game hits, and succeeds in depicts the Japanese gaming world of the era. One can even notice that ~half of the credits are intellectual property.

The reason I find the romance aspect of the show superb is because both characters themselves and their relations are fully fleshed out. To illustrate my point and show how good character writing is, I will write about the basics of Oono and Haruo's relationship for ... the first 2 episodes with as few spoilers as possible.

Akira Oono is a girl with an image of a perfect girl, but secretly goes to arcades. Now the reason for her gaming is not just because she likes games, but because games are an outlet of relieving stress from the intensive studying mandated in her home to make her perfect. With games being their common interest, she befriends Haruo. The reason for her befriending Haruo is not only because he is the only one she can share her interest for gaming, but also because Haruo is the only person to treat her like a normal human being. Furthermore, Haruo doesn’t hang out with Oono because she is a gamer girl and is pretty. But because Oono has superb skills, which creates a rivalry type relationship. Now, Haruo is dumb when it comes to female relationships. But in contrast with your everyday show where main character is dumb because he is dumb, Haruo is dumb because he only thinks about video games.

Supporting characters are extraordinarily good too. They do as much as possible to be memorable with their limited screen time.

Now you might like everything written above, but think you can't stand the art style. Then let me say that once you get used to it (which will probably take 1 or 2 episodes), you will notice that the 3D CG is executed well, and the anime even has goofy scenes that would be visually hard to achieve in conventional art style.

Overall, this is a great and memorable romance anime with retro games on the side.
