Hello fellow senpai! This is my first review ever so cut me some slack! I’m just a guy who loves Steins;Gate and wants to tell you my opinion on the sequel everyone hyped about. (At first...) SPOILERS AHEAD!
Based on the rating I gave, I’m sure you think I loved the new installment. And I did. But I did not think it compared to its prequel. Don’t get me wrong it was a good story, with most of the engaging elements from the first season, like the mystery and dark themes, and the sprinkled in humor and fan service. Time traveling stories really entertain me because
...
everyone has a different theory on how it works. It’s one of the most complicated things of nature, that’s obviously to much to comprehend by humans. But getting back to the point no matter how similar the sequel is to it’s successor, it is supposed to feel different. This is a special case because S;G 0 takes place in an alternate future.
Alternate futures is another thing that interests me. The argument that the choices you make affect the future, and that there are different futures based on each choice is mind boggling. I mean seriously the surefire way to get a headache is learning about time travel...So if you’ve seen Steins;Gate (spoiler alert), you know that Okabe saves Kurisu and Mayuri in the end, having found a way to jump onto the Steins;Gate world line (and tbh I don’t fully understand world lines). Now Steins;Gate 0 is in a world where Okabe gives up on trying to save Kurisu and decides to move on, swearing to never time travel again. This story is of course kind of hard to watch because we see a depressed Okabe just go about his life. He’s not Houin Kyoma anymore, just a normal college dude.
I mean I really like Maho and am glad we got to meet her. I liked how they gave a Moeka more screen time and improvement. Daru had his moments to shine with him handling being a dad and trying to impress his girlfriend so I did like him more after this season. And Mayuri was definitely best girl this time. I think that’s what I liked most from this season; the emotions from Mayuri and how much she loves Okabe touched my heart <3
What I didn’t like was the slow pacing and slice of lifey feel. Steins;Gate is supposed to be a thriller and I only felt that during the beginning and at the end. And idk I didn’t really like Suzuha this season. I mean I know she wants to stop world war three and stuff but I don’t remember her being so uptight. Also what was with that friend of Maho that was a spy at the end? They didn’t really explain much about her and pretty much only showed her in that one episode in the beginning. And my biggest nitpick is FREAKIN BORING OKABE. I think that is what made this sequel less enjoyable because Okabe’s crazy and paranoid personality with him always taking into his cellphone to the organization and yelling “This is the choice of Steins;Gate!” Is what got me hooked on the original series. Seeing him just an average joe with a scarring past just didn’t cut it for me. Of course wayyy at the end he did come back which was awesome. But tbh that took too long.
S;G 0 was definitely an entertaining series and did answer some itching questions we had. It had me on the edge of my seat every Wednesday. Amazing music, seeing the good ol lab members and new additions, appealing art, and a great different take on the story. But you know that why they call it an alternate future. It’s different from what we’re used to but not necessarily better.
Thanks for reading!
