The first anime I completed in 2017 and boy what a way to kick start it.
Binbougami Ga in my opinion is like one of a kind. It is an anime that is supposed to be a parody and you really shouldn't take it too seriously but at the same time, the anime clearly has its own story to tell. So in a way, that helps to provide some weight to the events that happen in the anime. And because it is such, even during moments that are supposed to be dramatic, you can expect a joke to pop up and that prevents it from becoming
...
as depressing as it might have. To me, the balance between light-hearted and serious moments were handled superbly and that is a huge plus for me.
And I have to give praise to the anime for developing actual believable backstories for many of the recurring characters. This is especially true in the case of Ichiko, who was revealled that she had some issues back during her childhood. Ichiko being the high and mighty lady type character (these characters who are usually rather annoying and not much attention is given to them) just so happens to be the main character here. And while it is true that she can be rather dislikable because of her attitude towards things, it is obvious that she gained a lot of development throughout the 13 episodes.
The animation done by Sunrise was good but there wasn't anything overly spectacular that caught my attention. But let me just say that there is something about this anime that makes the girls look really sexy, especially Ichiko. So yeah, character designs... check. And I love the accurate depiction of other anime being referenced in it. It was very easy to spot and very well done.
The opening theme has always captured my attention because of the chorus part that goes "One Way, Two Way...". And while it isn't one of my favourite songs, I'll admit that it was super catchy. The ending theme itself was good. In fact, I might even say that in terms of catchiness, the ending theme might even be better but that's debatable.
So overall, Binbougami Ga was super fun to watch and I was constantly being amazed by what each episode had to offer. While the anime could still have improved with its storytelling and completing what it had established, it has done more than enough for an anime that technically isn't supposed to be taken seriously. I really enjoyed this anime and I hope to see more of its kind in the future.
