Expect brilliance and you'll be let down.
Come in for a laugh and you'll be presently surprised.
Your enjoyment will skyrocket if you don't take it seriously.
At first starting as an over the top social commentary on class in ye olde England that revolves on titular character Moriarty, antagonist to Sherlock Holmes.
The world is seemingly crafted around this man. We get a few episodes of establishing his beliefs and why the people that surround him do so, gaining a little insight into their backstory.
Then along comes Sherlock, who is a sparkling playboy that acts smart and 180's to goofball every scene he's in. Wanting you to root
...
for him, then throwing all credibility out the window.
It comes to how blazé everything is tied in with the original books. Lifting some plot, characters and general ideas and slapping anime boy faces on top.
It's a professional fanfiction.
The dark themes are a bait, this anime gets praised for pushing right to the edge and backing off, but doing so ruins Moriarty as a character, and if they went too dark it would ruin everything else.
You get left with this mismatch that doesn't remember why it started dark and broody to begin with while it's trying to trick you into believing you were watching a comedy all along.
After Sherlock gets introduced, it's a downward tailspin. He's a parody of the original.
They try to present him as a suave jokester genius, but he comes across as a deadbeat playboy that's just messing with people because he can.
Problem is every character has this type of treatment. They keep their relationship dynamics and then get lobotomised. The stories and plot get a similar treatment.
This would've worked as a cat and mouse of two smart pretty boys with opposing ideas as they try to outsmart each other.
Instead this is an idea of two pretty boys, given smart sounding dialogue and an opposing arsenal of ass pulling and plot convenience pretending they are both the cat.
Watch the dub and enjoy a bunch of VAs coming together and pissing about with English accents.
There's enjoyment to be had, however if this show had nothing to do with the original stories it would've been better.
If you only loosely know the characters, you'll enjoy it more.
