There will be spoilers!!!
This is a bit late, I just caught wind of this movie tonight really and decided to watch it through at like 4am. I had this recommended to me a couple years ago and just never ended up watching it. I am sincerely grateful that I did finally end up watching this movie.
I want to put emphasis on one thing before I get into the actual review of this: I do not read manga. I also believe that people should hold Manga and the Anime Adaptation completely separate since they are different works of art on the same topic. That being said,
...
lets get into this.
This movie spoke to me on a real level, brought back memories that I still regret to this day, and perhaps gave me a new outlook on things going forward that I will never forget. Though I do understand this entire plot is in a perfect setting where everything works out in the end, I also understand that we can still learn from these situations. I used to be the kid who would bully others just for a laugh, never really understanding that I was doing any wrong... Perhaps I did understand and just needed a reason to fit in. Toxic yes, regrettable yes. I do wish I could go back and fix the wrongs that I created.
Koe no Katachi went from starting in a really sincere, kind and playful way to being very hard to watch in about 5 minutes. It was the very moment that it went from playful banter to hate and discontent that it really hit home. Watching a little girl get bullied because she is slightly different is just really hard to watch. And I think everyone can learn from this in some sense.
Shouya, whether you like the isolated character or not, carries this show hard. Its actually wicked how they did this as well because it isn't his character design that is the carry here, it is actually his character interaction with others that does it for me. It has been a very long time since I have seen a dynamic MC and it really shows here how strong it can be to have a character with a changing personality over time. Shouko is also an incredible character who straight up dictates the direction of everything. I do also enjoy that the side cast plays a very important role in this world and the plot surrounding it.
Kyo Ani... Impeccable job, but to be expected from one of the best if not THE best in the business. Both the art and sound are incredible, they fit so harmoniously at every twist and turn. Thank you again for everything you do, and I hope that you can continue to do so going forward.
There is only one gripe I have with this Movie and its a petty one. The skip from kid to adolescent is fine, but everything after that should have been shown. I get that it is hard to fit everything into a 2 hour movie, I get it, but I would have sat here for 5 hours if need be. Had me from minute one, don't be afraid to keep me for however long you want. I really wish I could see what happens after the movie ends between Shouya and Shouka, I really wanted to see a cute love story, but alas nothing of the kind, not even so much of a mention after Shouka told him she loves him. That to me is a shame, but again, 2 hours.
Overall, this is the 3rd 10/10 on my entire list, and well deserved. I recommend this to anyone and everyone because I believe if you don't try to throw some conspiracy in that they are trying to teach you about blind people, this is actually an incredible movie with little to no flaw.
