Maquia like Frieren tells the story of nearly immortal beings in the world of humans and their relationships and bonds to humans, these are elves in Frieren and Iorph in Maquia. -Frieren has been around for nearly a century and is incredibly powerful and had a lot of influence on the world through the party of heroes, generally stacking up on magical knowledge and skills over the centuries. In contrast Maquia is a very young Iorph and the Iorph in Maquia generally don't have any magical abilities and are mostly at the mercy of humans, either living highly secluded and far away from any human influence or blending in human society without being recognized as Iorph. -Maquia like Frieren has a deeply melancholic and tranquil tone to it and both heavily deal with the passage of time -Both are fantasy stories that are not static and in which many things change over time -Both tell stories about the value of relationships between long-living non-humans to another human, Frieren about friendship and romantic love, Maquia primarily about motherhood -Both are absolute masterful wonderful stories, Frieren however is a very popular series despite not having been around for very long whereas Maquia has been highly overlooked even among invested anime fans despite being already being a few years older than Frieren and exploring many aspects of the same concept. If you like the slower tranquil melancholic mood of Frieren that makes you reflect on life and relationships or find the general theme of long-living beings in the world of humans intriguing or want to explore the topic of motherhood more deeply you will surely love Maquia. It's one of the rare overlooked gems in anime.
