I would normally wait to finish a series before writing a review, but as of episode 8, I'm Mostly really enjoying this one.
Teens training for various jobs pertaining to space travel on a space station orbiting some kind of gravity well, find themselves suddenly without any instructors or adults to supervise them, as they try to establish some kind of order amidst a string of internal and external threats to their lives.
I'm not an art snob, as long as it's not bad CGI the art is rarely a problem for me in an anime. I am, however, extremely picky when it comes to music. I
...
absolutely HATE the hip hop they put in this show. I wouldn't care if it fit the theme somehow, but there's nothing even remotely "urban" about this anime. It's a bunch of Japanese space cadets trying to survive being thrown into situations they never expected. In space. Not on the streets. The music is very out of place and jarringly so, at least for me.
That aside, my only other complaint is the strangely garbed weird chick that appears in times of tension and mumbles to herself what people are feeling. I am Assuming she's some kind of not very bright sentient AI for the ship they're on, but they haven't given a hint in 8 episodes about her and it's getting a bit old. She just appears, babbles, ship does something, she disappears.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Up until this point, my review was of the first 8 episodes. I have now finished the show.
Well, the show seems to fall apart towards the end, but at the same time, the crew of the Ryvius is also falling apart so I suppose it works. It seems like the Sphix tend to drive people crazy, so that would explain the warping of personalities over time and the emotional overreactions.
Unfortunately, I stopped caring about Any of the characters a while back. None of them are very relatable or sympathetic by the end of the show. The two brothers in particular annoy me to no end. One is a wimp, the other is completely irrational and angry 98% of the time, throwing a tantrum whenever he sees his brother.
The final episode was just kinda lame. The final shot, a tad confusing. I won't spoil it but the idea that they'd still be using all of the same ships 1000+ years in the future seems a bit... ridiculous.
It's not a bad show though, while it didn't end up being quite what I had hoped, I don't regret watching it and wouldn't dissuade others from doing so.

I suppose that anyone who knows anime already knows an has probably seen Akira at least once.
Art- it was friggin awesome when it came out, people need to keep in mind that this show was released in 1988! If you don't like the style, that's personal taste, but it's simply unfair for people to rip on the film for looking "dated." I have always enjoyed the messy intricate looking tech you saw in older anime, the characters aren't "beautiful" but they really weren't Supposed to be. It's a bunch of teenage biker punks, kids deformed from drugs and medical experiments, and otherwise normal people. The
...
characters are easily recognized though, reasonably well fleshed out in most cases, and interesting.
Tetsuo's inferiority complex is something I've seen in real life (sans super powers) and his reaction to suddenly gaining power over others (amped up by his drug use) and the results of him going overboard are pretty realistic and make sense.
Kaneda seems to feel responsible for Tetsuo more than anything else, and is determined to deal with him when saving him is no longer possible. Though he is the protagonist, he's not an incredibly interesting character by himself, a hormonal skirt chaser dragged into terrorist plots and eventually into things far beyond his understanding while trying to get a date.
Kei...I really don't know why Kaneda is so persistent, she's completely absorbed in her terrorism and has all of the personality of your average doorknob.
The rat man politician- he's every politician ever, with a face that fits the role.
There's a lot going on behind the scenes in this film, the manga goes much further and much deeper into things. While I recommend watching this to anyone who likes anime that isn't about little girls and such, if you find yourself confused and/or wanting to know more about the Akira world, read the manga.
That said, the film by itself is one of my favorites.

This is not the sort of thing I would normally choose to watch.
It is extremely bright and colorful, if you like things that move at a fairly frantic pace and are very colorful, with protagonists who aren't too bright but make up for it with enthusiasm, this may be for you!
I guess there's a lot of talk of some gay sub plot but there's only one scene I recall where the MC's lips get a bit too close to those of his new buddy and it seemed to pause on that for a second, but otherwise? Nah. As usual certain groups of fans are
...
blowing things out of proportion to suit their fanfics.
The story is a bit...absurd. The designs for pretty much everything are...absurd. The characters and their reactions to the events unfolding around them are generally...absurd. However, it's really not a bad show if you like this type of anime. I would think that fans of Gurren Lagann will enjoy it.

I wish I could say that Gibiate is so bad that it's good, but, it's just plain Bad.
A samurai and a ninjai are transported from the year 1600 to the near future, and when people find out, their reaction is ho-hum. No big deal. As if the fact that there's a mutating disease that turns humans into terrible CGI monsters means that time travel is a given.
As the the CGI...I Hate CGI, even if it's well done. And this is NOT. The CGI is out of place, awful, ugly, and unresponsive. There's no life to them whatsoever.
All of the characters are boring stereotypes. It's monster
...
Armageddon, but people have time to hair dye and makeup, fancy hairstyles etc.
The fights are boring and uninteresting. Big man smash. Ninja throws strings. Zoop. Samurai go aaaa. Chop Chop. Swish. 80's "tough chick" female cop goes boom boom with a shotgun. Useless blonde girl goes "I'LL COME, TOO!" and will invariably fall on her face or get cornered and need rescuing because she is utterly worthless.
It's just plain awful. Don't waste your time, this show has no redeeming qualities of any kind.

One of my favorite manga, I love the art style, the plot, the MC, even most of the side characters are interesting.
I'm Not a big fan of Nihei's other works, Sidonia was okay but I never cared for the MC or the phallic mushroom tentacle monster love interest, nor do I care for how his art style has changed from ultra dark to ultra light last I saw.
Blame takes place in a fascinating...world? We're not even exactly sure how large the city IS now, but it has devoured most of the solar system, at least. In this vast space, the story possibilities are near
...
endless. I would have been thrilled to see spin offs just showing what's going on in the REST of the city, but the story of Killy and his ongoing mission to find someone who still carries the net terminal gene is a good one. Cyber humans, mutants, synthetic life, and a pistol that can lay waste to almost anything.
I hesitate to get into any specifics, but I highly recommend BLAME! to anyone who doesn't need to have the entire story patiently explained to them.

NARUTOOOOOO... eh.
Naruto starts off in a direction that I simply wish the show had continued following. Ninja train to complete all manner of jobs, some straightforward, some shady as heck including paid assassinations. Somewhere along the line, they became nothing but dull shonen stereotypes, magic wizards with a Japanese twist. You can call them ninjas if you wish, but they're just punching wizards, powered by friendship, who exist solely to protect their pals.
Yes, Naruto IS a shonen anime, but I remember way back reading the manga for the first time, I felt like it was going to take a darker route. I really don't
...
like how the series ended. I never expected it to become some edgy murder fest, but...the need to redeem almost every single bad guy? It's lame, it takes any tension you might feel out of the story when you know that any enemy that gets enough fan love, will eventually help the good guys. The worst offense was what they did to the Kyuubi. The idea that at any time this raging evil with nearly unstoppable power could finally break loose if Naruto was pushed too far, that was cool. Now he's a talking pet dog.
Anyway, if you want a rather generic, if pretty well done series, Naruto isn't bad as long as you skip the filler episodes. Of which there are Many.
If you're looking for a story where the author wasn't afraid to take chances, this probably isn't for you.

This show has been reviewed and debated to death and back again, but I might as well add my .02
NGE Could have been brilliant. I like the bones of the story, the lore expanded upon in EOE was interesting and pretty unique. Visually it was excellent for the time and stands up just fine today if you keep the age of the show in mind. The opening theme gets stuck in my head at random and has for years ever since the first time I watched it.
But, I have now watched NGE three times over the years. I absolutely hated it the first two times.
...
This third time, it was tolerable until the final two episodes.
I do not like Shinji. You amateur psychologists apparently have an extremely low opinion of humanity when you claim that detractors of the show hate that they see Shinji in themselves, or that most people would react as he did. Most people actually manage to rise to the occasion, or at least try to, even when thrown into some pretty crazy scenarios. The entirety of human history is filled with teenagers thrown into bloody battles where friends and family are being brutally hacked and beaten to death all around them. I won't say those people all came out of such experiences "whole" but they still managed to do more then curl up in a useless ball and whine.
I have always given Shinji a total pass on his first battle. I mean, he had no idea what to do and suddenly everyone expects him to fight a giant monster with a giant robot he's never even seen, let alone used before. But after that he gets training and experience and never really gets better. Later, he has the power to annihilate the enemy and save the girl he...loves? But nah, he sits there in "poor me" mode while she's brutally slain.
I will defend Shinji this far- He was basically born and raised to fail. He is weak. Mentally completely broken. Even if we say it's not his fault because he was intentionally broken, that still doesn't make him an enjoyable character to watch, nor have I ever found him to be relatable. Your mileage may vary, of course.
Shinji aside, NONE of the characters are particularly enjoyable, and that's the problem with NGE as I see it. The basic plot is truly interesting, something amazing could have been done with it. But the cast of characters we're forced to experience it through ruin it. There's nobody to root for. A drunken floozy, a merciless father figure, a typical tsundere covering her weakness with arrogance, the whiner, and a girl with almost zero personality.
The fact that they have the teenage pilots attending school instead of training all day is ridiculous. They spend more time Wasting time than anything else. True, eventually it seems like this was intentional, that the powers that be Wanted them to barely succeed and never get too confident or competent, but it makes for a strange viewing experience, why did no one ever question the pathetic training schedule? Giant monsters want to end all of humanity? Whatever, I have a test on Friday! They are CONSTANTLY in a rush to get back to the base as a monster approaches, why not just, y'know, keep the only people who can pilot your robots, near the robots? At one point they end up locked out of the base and have to break in!
After having gone through it three times, I won't say it's a Bad show. It's definitely Extremely overrated IMO. I don't feel like it's a "must watch" unless you simply want to be able to discuss it with others, or if you're one of those people who watches everything on a top 10 list for the sake of having seen all of the "classics."
If you're still reading this and asking yourself why I would watch this three times over the years even though I hated it the first two times, that's simple. I change. As I change my perspective changes. Shows I loved as a teen, I may find dull or uninteresting now. Things I hated, might now make sense.
I'm a bit more sympathetic to Shinji now, but I still don't Like him.

If NGE fans get to say that detractors just "don't get it" then people adding this OVA to Worst Anime lists are in the same boat.
I wasn't expecting much from this show, but, what I found was deeper than I had expected. Geist has no time to waste on needless words, this forces you to actually pay attention to what you see on screen. Upon his release, he spies a broken pocket watch on the ground. He picks it up, and destroys it with a smile. Watch for that smile,it speaks volumes more than any internal monologue could have.
Geist is a battle
...
freak. All he thinks about, all day, every day, is the next battle, fire, blood, explosions. This is how they made him. Every action is weighed and measured by how much fighting it will bring. Geist shows, for example, the ability to delay his battle lust gratification in order to set up even greater battles later when he ||joins the remnants of the regular army on their mission to stop the doomsday robot army from being unleashed|| Sure, Geist could have slaughtered them all immediately, but he held back knowing that these weaklings would lead him to a real challenge.
When the sleazy biker lady tries to seduce him, Geist is busy staring at the ceiling, thinking about battle. He doesn't even glance at her, she doesn't exist to him until he thinks to ask her tactical questions. She strips. He's still staring at the ceiling, fighting battles in his head. She crawls on top of him and tries to kiss him. He's STILL staring straight up at the ceiling, until finally she annoys him and he flings her to the floor, saying that he values only what's in her head, and doesn't care about the rest. Remember, this was the 80's, the hero never turned down an opportunity to get it on, but not Geist.
At the end, the crisis is averted, the world is safe, or as safe as it ever was, then Geist does something that completely turns the "soldier betrayed by his own" trope on its head, proving that maybe those that locked him away weren't wrong to do so, and that literally nothing matters to him except the next fight.
I think the fact that Geist was created to be a completely battle obsessed killing machine actually makes him a deeper character than anyone gives him credit for. It's just that ALL of his depth is wrapped up in fighting. You have to watch him for unspoken cues. True, the side characters aren't particularly well fleshed out, but let's be real, it's only a 47 minute film.
I really wanted to just break down the whole movie here, but tried to restrain myself while still making some points that I felt get ignored in the rush to put down MD Geist.
The sound track is very low budget 80's, but I don't think that's such a bad thing. The animation seems fine for the era, not stellar but it kinda fits.
All in all I found Geist to be an interesting take on the "super soldier thrown away by his government" stories that were popular in the 80's and early 90's and enjoyed it immensely.
