So, when do you think which episode would be the first to not have a sex scene in it? Trick question, quite literally EVERY SINGLE EPISODE has one. I was genuinely waiting for at least one episode where the main character wasn't diddling girls for almost always no exact reason. It's fascinating to me how so many people call this "the best revenge story" or even the "greatest anime of all time". Truly, how in the world did this get so much defenders? I saw a reviewer plainly mention that this could stand above Evangelion, and I disagree to the point that those muttered words
...
are almost appalling.
So, firstly, the characters.
Personality wise, I don't recall any of them being special, and the most interesting character, in my opinion, Bullet, has a screentime of around probably 6 minutes total. His dynamic of how his thoughts work, what he believes to be right and wrong, and the constant switching of what he wants makes him a pretty unique character, and a close second behind would be Hawkeye, oh, but what am I saying? They don't have massive bouncing breasts, so what's the point in learning more about them? Instead, show a bland, shallow girl, oh, and let her have sex with the main character to show how AWESOME he is! The series leads you to believe that Keyaru's the good guy, but it doesn't really make up for the things he's doing. Yes, you can say he had sex with Flare/Freiya to get his revenge, which makes sense, but in what part of his revenge plan did he need to manipulate Setsuna into sex to "make her stronger" and "to help avenge her people's deaths", and all while the girl was 14 years old? Also, later, I believe he shames Eve for not having sex with him, and the girls somehow agree that it's "disrespectful" to turn down his offer, and if I recall, Eve and Keyaru had only known eachother from a couple of days to literally hours.
Next, the plot.
The plot is interesting, and actually even had potential, but the predictable writing patterns kind of blow it for me. I feel I also got bored with the amount of "the good guy saves the day and nothing happens that's bad, the end". As soon as I saw the characters, I knew exactly what happens to each of them. Pretty girl shows up. Well gee, I think she toootally isn't going to get railed by the main character. A merchant that's revealed near the end of the series with a design that had effort put in, I knew immediately he was gonna get killed. Also, I'd also like to touch on the subject of how the author uses rape. To me, it felt that whenever the author needed shock value, he just said; "Bah, just throw in rape. That'll get em.". Off of the top of my head, I remembered about 4 or 5 times rape is committed/mentioned. We know the hero was raped for years, and to get justice he... rapes more people?? As I mentioned, the protagonist is the one we're supposed to side with? I just wish that sometime after he got released from the castle, something bad would happen to him. The only time this really happened, he wasn't even the one getting hurt. One of his friends that he only knew for a couple of days died, but everything other than that has been going his way. One final thing I want to talk about is the use of revenge in the story. I feel the author wants to justify the felonies the characters commit, and make the things Keyaru and the other characters seem appropriate and justified, no matter what their destruction brings. The topic of revenge seems to pop up a lot, between Setsuna, Keyaru, and Eve. Except, every grudge or fighting back, even though it's somebody else's problem, Keyaru always ends up being the savior. Yes, the girls can fight back to an ability, and even though there is most likely the best magic caster in the world on their team, everything ends in Keyaru. It truly doesn't matter what he did on the scene, but it will always end by Keyaru being rewarded with sex.
So yeah, my overall ranking was a 3. Although the show genuinely sucked, it was surprisingly good at making you want to watch more.
TLDR: This anime is almost entirely fanservice, and it's not well written at all. The same tricks are pulled multiple times enough to where it gets very easily predictable, and the characters lack depth.
