Yo, my profile looks like shit but I'll be reworking it once I get around to finishing more anime and manga, however long that'll take...
Also, my mean scores are pretty low rn on account of me having wiped my ratings clear. Hoping to re-evaluate and re-issue better scores in the future, so don't pay it any mind for the time being.
Ratings 7 through 10 are not my own descriptions and they do not reflect my own thoughts or beliefs. They're just templates for me to go back and edit later in order to streamline the process of detailing my own rating criteria. Thanks for understanding.
10 - TBD
Near perfect and, crucially, important to me on a personal level. These shows feel like they have fundamentally changed the way I think about things and/or have made a perceptively palpable impact on the way I live my life.
9 - TBD
Near perfect. I have no major complaints about anything in the show, and its good qualities are exceptionally well-executed. In quality these are on par with a 10, but lack the same level of personal impact.
8 - TBD
An exceptionally good show, which may have negative elements, but they are so greatly outweighed by the positive that they don't detract from my overall appreciation for the product.
7 - TBD
Consistently entertaining or engaging, though with some major flaws or some elements that fall flat in critical ways so as to impair my overall appreciation for the product. Very good, but not extraordinary.
6 - This anime isn't exactly outstanding, but it's just engaging enough for me to come away having been sufficiently satisfied.
It certainly isn't the most interesting production that I've had to sit through, although at the very least I can't say I didn't have a marginally enjoyable time throughout the majority of my viewing experience. However, that isn't disregarding the numerous recurring flaws significantly detracting from the work's overall quality consistency, nor does it excuse the noticeable lack of major highs exhibited throughout in regard to its lackluster storytelling, animation, direction, etc. I guess it could be referred to as somewhat of a mixed bag, an overall enjoyable production consistently brought down by just a tad too many negatives for it to be considered a standout anime.
5 - This anime has a decent balance of good and bad qualities, but its lackluster execution assures its mediocre standing.
Although this production adheres well to the tropes and style that make the medium so beloved, its premise and narrative are both developed in a noticeably uninspired, listless, and painfully predictable manner throughout, sapping the work of its overall uniqueness and memorability. The production is also consistently held back by recurring instances of sub-par writing, unremarkable animation, bland directorial style, etc., all of which significantly downplay the work's more favorable aspects. Despite the multitude of decent qualities exhibited throughout its runtime, this production's numerous shortcomings ultimately result in it having scarcely missed the mark for qualifying as a noteworthy anime.
This rating is also reserved for standalone non-filler anime productions such as specials, OVAs, and ONAs.
The level of quality at which these specials/OVAs/ONAs were produced is comparable to that which was dedicated to their original works, and the plot threads they explore may be disregarded without risk of losing context for significant developments made in said works' expanding narrative. However, the developments made in these productions definitely hold a level of importance when it comes to fleshing out some particular, smaller aspects of the overarching plot. The tidbits of narrative goodness explored in these specials/OVAs/ONAs are tasteful enough for some, but smaller productions such as these cannot stand by themselves when they are to be compared with full-length anime productions.
4 - This anime is almost good enough to warrant an adequate rating, but its bad elements are just too egregious to follow up.
Despite having been barely tolerable enough to sit through for the majority of the viewing experience, it is important to note that this production does exhibit a multitude of palatable qualities outstanding from what the rest of the work has to offer. Even still, given the fact that these various standout elements are considerably dwarfed by the sheer quantity of bad aspects prevalent throughout the rest of the production, it simply isn't enough for this anime to be considered a reasonable investment of one's valuable time. All in all, even if it wasn't an entirely unenjoyable experience, it was an unenjoyable experience nonetheless.
This rating is also reserved for standalone filler anime productions such as specials, OVAs, and ONAs.
No matter the level of quality at which these specials/OVAs/ONAs were produced, they do not contribute to any important plot threads in their original works in any meaningful way, shape, or form. They exist primarily to distract the audience away from the main plot of the work, and to show what the characters could hypothetically get up to when they are not participating in and/or tending to their usual activities and responsibilities as seen throughout the original work. The type of content included in these specials/OVAs/ONAs is fun and all, but smaller productions such as these cannot stand by themselves when they are to be compared with full-length anime productions.
3 - This anime had few redeeming qualities, but it's gotta be worth some of our poor animators' sleepless nights, right?
Whilst this production was unrelentingly upsetting to watch from start to finish, at least it is possible for one to derive a small hint of levity and enjoyment from the work by laughing at the absolutely hilarious state in which it had been released. Besides that though, it is genuinely difficult to take away anything else of particular quality from this anime, and the minor aspects of the production which could still hold some degree of value and be appreciated in isolation are usually found few and far between. Hey, at the very least you can come away from this experience having enjoyed your time laughing at something rather than nothing at all.
This rating is also reserved for standalone non-additive anime productions such as recap specials.
No matter the level of quality at which these recap specials were produced, they do not contribute anything meaningful to their original works in any way, shape, or form. They exist primarily to go over the main plot points of an anime's overarching narrative, replaying older scenes with overlayed descriptive narration, in order to aid the audience in getting caught up for future releases of said anime. These kinds of specials are recommended if you can't remember the important plot threads previously developed in a certain anime, but smaller productions such as these cannot stand by themselves when they are to be compared with full-length anime productions.
2 - This anime is fundamentally irredeemable on every level you can possibly think of... No seriously, it's that bad.
In light of the deplorable, disgraceful state in which this work was released, anyone who dares to watch this colossal failure of a production will find their sensibilities completely and utterly defiled beyond recovery by the end of their viewing experience. The animation, soundtrack, sound design, dialogue, voice acting, storytelling, character-building, world-building, direction, as well as adaptation quality (for pre-existing works) were all executed terribly. This experience has irreparably damaged my very soul, and thus, I would never wish the displeasure of watching this abhorrent anime on anyone else... Don't waste your time with this one!
(Just ignore this rating for now, I'll change it later) 1 - This rating is reserved exclusively for hentai.
Understand that I'm not saying anything like "all hentai is garbage", not at all, because everyone knows that hentai is peak fiction. On the contrary, I believe hentai is a medium that appeals to its core audience via fundamentally different subject matter compared to other mainstream genres of anime and manga, subject matter which is generally considered to be taboo throughout the larger industry. From my own perspective, these differing mediums are fundamentally incomparable to one another in terms of what each is aiming to produce for their respective audiences, so why bother trying to compare them in the first place?
