Fune wo Amu

Rakugo and Fune both have a simple, slow, mature themes. Both series are also beautifully designed, with stunning animation and sound tracks. So first off the similarity in the story line, both series are explore old craft professions (Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - Rakugo a traditional Japanese form of comedic storytelling ) (Fune wo Amu - the process and hardship that comes with making a dictionary) where we get to follow our main characters through their journey, both characters learn under professionals and aspire to accomplish something one day. Also both main characters have the second lead with an opposite personality who helps them in their career and relationships. Rakugo has some quite dark/deep moments, as it deals with affairs and death while Fune has a steady flow to the story with not much drama, however they’re both calming, heartwarming and express realistic situations.

3-gatsu no Lion

First off both are mainly focused on old traditional Japanese 1 on 1 games, Chihayafuru (Karuta) and Sangatsu (Shogi). The games are considered competitive sports where players are ranked and compete to go higher reaching the top position. Both main characters admire that position and consider the people at top their biggest rivals. Of course the main characters are very talented and are both bounded to childhood friends who are skilled at the games too. Both series show amazing characters' development and how they deal with struggles and improvement. The games are greatly introduced and developed in a charming way that a viewer could easily understand. Now 3-gatsu has some quite dark/deep moments, while Chihayafuru is rather happy and cheerful, the drama in that sense is different however both series still have that colourful atmosphere and heartwarming vibe.
