Been reading shortcake cake and thus far I like it (review written at 5 volumes, have read 8 currently)
Story; Its a shoujo manga, about a girl who ends up in a boarding house to prevent an long commute to school. She didn't mind the idea of the commute at first but changed her mind... At first it was also hard to see who she was interested in, as it goes on the love triangle develops as well as the friendship with the two male leads who I think have great chemistry.
Characters:
Ten: The heroine, odd but cute she had a good attitude throughout.
Riku: Flirt, Ten didn't
...
put up with his BS. I liked him more by the end.
Chiaki: Handsome and a book worm, wants to be a good friend.... (AND HE IS)
Rei: A brat... is petty with Riku for some reason, i'm actually interested in what his and Riku's problem is which is currently my main drive for continueing to read though the romance was also cute.
Even at the end I think Rei is only 10% likable......
Art: Really good, the style is distinct.
Overall: Characters are a bit basic but I enjoy how the story explores the relationship with eachother.
It seems a key point of this manga is how first impressions/opinions of a person can change as you get to know them. I cannot tell you what i'll think of this series 5 volumes from now, the only way to know what a story is about is to read more of it or finish it till the last page. At that point I might like it or I might not... so far I think its enjoyable.

Finally got around to reading the remaining four volumes... and have to say overall Shortcake cake
was pretty good. It was neither too short nor too long, its themes of a family fued and finding family was done really well, though kids will be kids! didn't think shortcake cake would get that deep but
Riku's situation was difficult as was his character. At the end of the day I am glad I read this all the way to the end, the romance of the main leads was awkward but sweet, I do think it did rush itself a little.
Oh well, it might not be the best but this was an enjoyable read about family matters and happiness...
One small thing, it is about physical volume from VIZ. It is hard to keep track of chapters. I thought there were atleast 3 ch per volume but apparently at time of writing I had read 30 which you can see at the end of the volume where all the art work for the individual chapters is.... I still wonder why couldn't they put them in between the chapters like most manga do? After more thought and finishing the series it makes sense? since a lot of that art doesn't really fit the story being told
so it might be a good thing that the art is seperate but why they didn't put the chapter titles is a mystery, so now the story/scenario would jump without warning.
