Well, the time has come for me to watch this remake of original Hellsing series and make a review.
For first, i would like to say that i didn't notice any difference between new one and 2001 version, except some plot changes (that occur to be manga related) and a bit darker drawing of backgrounds and else.
For second, i watched original series 11-12 years ago, when i was basicly a kid and reaction when i saw it back then, and my reaction now - is totally different. Why? Just because you may like what is on screen without thinking about it, but in adult
...
age you do other way.
I saw many illogical and weird things those past years of my anime addiction...(yeah xD). But I still was surprised how good, solid and sometimes funny anime can be ruined because it has such a stupid plot. Yes, you read that right. Now hate me!
But if you are still interested... then i tell you - its a weird mix of vampires + Nazis + religion. Sounds fine for you? Yes, it could be great and fun... if things were just a bit more realistic and not so exaggerated.
First 3 episodes were great. Contrast of Hellsing vampires hunting for other evil vampires and Iscariot organization (Blade of God) under Catholic church opposing them in that work. Pretty interesting it was. And it would be enough to make this good...
Until Millennium (Nazis) appeared and things started to get bad. They fly on zeppelins and use some old-type computers and electronics like if it was 1950 or so (while anime timeline seems to be around early 2000s). And what about army? Same thing - a damn Panzerfaust and MP-40 are the weapons of choice for 21 century Nazis...
OK, they might have old stuff, but what about the idea they bare this time? Its of course the best stereotypish idea you can find! - Nazis invading London since they failed in 1940s...
But not only Nazis have their brain cells at minimum, we also have some religious group of Vatican forces who want to purge all protestant Catholics and make Britain - Vatican domain....
If not those, i would love the series. Characters are not so deep and some will make you laugh about their silliness. But they don't lack charisma and it left me with good taste of Alucard badassery, Seras Victoria naivety and epicness of battle scenes. Else is just a cover to make this mash-up. Verdict - 7/10. It could be better!
Questions that still bother me:
1) Whats so important about Hellsing HQ mansion that they try to assault and capture it over and over again?
2) Why Hellsing doesn't have any more Agents (vampire hunters) like Alucard and Butler guy? But have pointless soldiers who cant even defend mansion from silly Ghouls that move like turtles.
3) Neo Nazis stuck in late 1940!? I know they are closed up organization and had to be super cautious or be found... But using WW2 era electronics in 1990s, when people already got mobiles? You serious? Not to mention their equipment...
