Overall a very strange show, with alot of missed potential.
To start off the art style is pretty standard with no really stand out moments, there's a little bit of CG mixed in there but its hardly of any concern. The music during the show is pretty forgettable but serves its purpose, however the opening and ending themes really are quite good and have some interesting visuals.
Now the characters of the show are a big problem. Yuno, the crazy pink haired chick that this show is known for, is really the only driving force when it comes to real character
...
development. Minene helps a little too but the rest of the characters come of as very flat and static, however I gave characters such a low score because of the male lead. 'Yuki' as Yuno calls him is a sad little man who's personality and motivations seem to change as often as the damn tide. Sometimes he's brave, sometimes he's a wimp, sometimes he's a high functioning sociopath and sometimes he's thicker than the great wall of china.
Now the story starts off well and the premise is interesting, but I feel like during the story board for each episode Billy Mays dropped into the studios proclaiming "But Wait! There's more!" because mechanics and rules keep getting added on all the way up until the very end, and it is seriously ridiculous. By the end of the show the plot bites the bullet in a matter of speaking and really plummets.
Basic Idea: A group of 12 people (but a guarantee you this isn't even a sold rule in itself) are all given phones with the ability to read into the future, each phone is catered for the personality of each contestant. These contestants must have a battle royal in order to determine who will be the next god of this universe, last one left standing gets the job. Now being as the current god (Deus, no not Ex Machina, but he might as well be) is on a time crunch he and his assistant stur up the cometition in order to hurry things along and make them interesting.

Goodness this show is sounds and looks like the love child of Bones and Ufotable. But it seems A-1 can push the animation budget when they want to. If there is anything that will stick with you from this anime, I hope that will be it. Visually this show is impressive and the fight choreography is splendid. Along with a beautiful sound track filled with mood setting orchestral music I wish I could judge this show purely on its ascetics. However that is not the case.
Our main protagonist is pretty devoid of real personality. Not so much a strong silent
...
type as a just silent for the sake of being silent type. He is a wish fulfillment character nad actsas an empty jug which you can fill yourself into. Now our main female character has a three stage processed she goes through. Stage 1: silent random badass, stage 2: angry tsundere love interest, and finally stage 3: lovey dovey wifu. The remaining characters really are not worth to much of a mention as they only show up for an episode or two and can generally be described by a single trait
The setting is that of a fantasy RPG, but with very few RPG elements ever showing up I like to think of it as colorful Skyrim with a better combat system. Also, no magic, at least for the first half....
For a good part of the first half the show sticks with an episodic style and jumps around with our lead as he runs into different situations and resolves them. This is mainly world building and is where the show shines. However as the main story starts to peak its head around the corner you start to see the minimized skeleton it is. It almost feels shoe horned in at times and really only functions as a start and end point.
I recommend watching the first half of season one and two as these are the points at which the show is the most entertaining. But be warned the second half of season one is cancer and the second half of season two actually has to do with cancer! Much like cancer it is slow and painful and not something you need in your life.
Basic Idea: Thousands of people get trapped in a game that has just been relieved. For some this might usually be a good thing. "I'm trapped in a game I've been wanting to play! Finally free of my worldly duties!!! NO SCREW YOU JILL FROM ACCOUNTING, I'M NEVER GONNA FILE THOSE TAX RETURNS!!! HAHAHHAAHAHHA"
.....Regardless, there is a twist. If you die in the game you die in real life! We follow a certain beta tester as he discovers the hardships of this new world, helps with trying to escape it, and unintentionally forms a harem! (Although I guess its pretty rare for any character to purposefully form a harem in any anime).

Stylized and cool is what this anime strives to be above all else. Without a doubt this show is nice to look at and has a distinct style to it. The action scenes are an especially nice treat.
This show takes up an episodic style with our three main characters going from area to area in search for the samurai who smells of sunflowers. There are plenty of great episodes, but the problem is there are two or three episodes that simply are just bad or out of place. Additionally, the main plot line, the aforementioned samurai who smells of sunflowers, is
...
weak and only surfaces to give our characters are reason to move on to the next stop on their journey.
Now as for characters Mugen carries the other two leads on his back. Neither Jin or Fuu are bad characters, but Mugen is given so much more background and development throughout the series that the other two just fail in comparison. Hell, even his appearance in the first episode overshadows the other two.
The soundtrack is comprised of mainly funk songs and the intro is a slow stylized rap, while the ending is smooth jazzy and calming. This really adds to the atmosphere that Champloo goes for.
Basic Idea: Our three heroes, and a squirrel...rat....thing (mandatory cute animal friend of our female lead), are on a journey to find the samurai who smells of sunflowers. Throughout their journey they run into problems and resolve them. More is relieved about our two sword wielding friends throughout the series and we start to understand their ideologies and behavior.

Black Lagoon is an action packed thrill ride without a filter. The action scenes are animated wonderfully and there are very few times when the animation dips under its high standards.
The characters are well developed and interesting. Personally I enjoyed the character that was Balalaika the Russian mafia leader. The show itself is mainly in the episodic format, but with the same characters. There are a few 2 and 3 episode arcs but there really is no overarching story line.
Episodes are hit or miss, with some being amazing, others being creepy as hell and some just kind of
...
falling short.
The music was not to my liking, but that was purely based on personal taste. The music is often quite atmospheric and sets the tone before and during scenes.
Note:
If you find that you like the show and are not satisfied with the final arc in the second season, I highly recommend the four part OVA: Roberta's blood trail. I feel it acts as a better ending to the series than the final arc.
Basic Idea: We follow the exploits of the Lagoon company, a black market transportation and guns for hire company (close to modern day pirates...kinda). We see things through the eyes of our main protagonist Rock, a Japanese businessman who is new to this life of action.

A wonderful anime all around. The entire show has a feeling of calm serenity about it and is extremely relaxing.
The music and art style of the anime blend seamlessly. It is truly a beautiful work to look at. Now this is a slower anime so the animation quality is kept quite high throughout the series. Additionally alot of the music is purely instrumentals that blend into the background.
Now this anime does take up an episodic approach, meaning that each episode starts from scratch for the most part with a different situation coming up at the beginning and generally being
...
resolved by the end. Rinse wash repeat. This is not the type of show that is meant to be binge watched, there is no overarching story. One should watch this show when they want to relax and watch something peaceful.
Basic Idea: There exist spirits that live alongside us and interact with us throughout our daily lives and we have no perception of them. For better or worse these spirits go about their business and some cause problems when they interact with humans. Our protagonist is a Mushi master and can see these spirits. He goes about helping people throughout the land with these problems that arise.
