"Couples die" the anime.

For a mecha from the late-70s this series has a surprising attention to detail and believability to it. Clearly a lot of thought was put into the more technical aspects of this series. The fight or battle scenes couldn't be considered contrived. Characters act rationally, with allowances for a few mental breakdowns, and more importantly actions have reasonable consequences.

However, I consider Gundam an above average series at best. The trope of introducing and eliminating couples in this series is one of the the cheapest mockeries of emotional stakes I've ever seen. That may sound like hyperbole, but this basic formula is over-prevalent ...

Now that I think about it, this may be the first anime series I've seen. Albeit I only saw a handful of episodes at the time, and given that it's been nearly a decade since then, I figured it was about time I give this series another watch.

I remembered Guardian of the Spirit for its intense action scenes. Although on my re-watch I find them far and few between, they are certainly welcome when they happen.
